projectmoon@gazeshift @Mastodon You use a platform that is not Mastodon (or is a Mastodon fork?). Regular Mastodon is limited to 500 characters. Other platforms have more.

@gazeshift Fediverse (i.e. "federated universe") is kind of like email. There are many different servers running their own software that can talk to each other.
Like for example, you could have signed up (or still sign up) at mastodon.art, or hachyderm.io.
I am posting this to you from a platform called Sharkey, hosted on my own server. Sharkey itself is a fork of something called Misskey. It's a completely different piece of software than Mastodon, but they can talk to one another.
Most of the Fediverse is composed of Mastodon instances, of which mastodon.social is the largest. But there's plenty of other servers that don't use Mastodon.
