Fewer people using Elon Musk’s X as it struggles to keep users

The number of people using X daily is falling, more than a year after tech billionaire Elon Musk bought the app formerly known as Twitter.

NBC News
@taylorlorenz wait, TikTok has a downtrend? That's news to me.
@writeblankspace @taylorlorenz Yeah, I'm really surprised by that, I wonder what's behind it
@writeblankspace
I have seen a dramatic decline in the algorithm. They are promoting longer content now a minimum 1 minute is needed for monetization. That used to be the max.That combined with half the videos now being sponsored posts or ads. And finally them reducing dramatically the money they pay to creators for popular posts is making it a much less desirable experience than 2 years ago
@taylorlorenz
@taylorlorenz justly deserved for once.
@taylorlorenz And they say the news are all doom and gloom!
@taylorlorenz soon to read as "former platform formerly known as twitter"
@taylorlorenz When you're drowning, your panic causes you to grab onto whatever floats your way. Of course if it's a person and they're not a lifeguard, you may cause them to drown too. In this case, one can only hope.

@taylorlorenz It's interesting that they ALL seem to be on a decline (though a much smaller one than X/Twitter) over the last year.

I wonder, Is there a decrease in social media usage in general? A change in how people are using social media (not on their phones), or a migration to other platforms not listed on this graph, like Mastadon, reddit, lemmy, etc?

@austinphilp @taylorlorenz

Definitely not Reddit. Mastodon, yes.

@RodneyPetersonTalent @taylorlorenz While I'd like this to be true, Mastadon's active user count has also seen a slight decline in 2023 similar to those of the Non-X social media platforms.

According to https://mastodon-analytics.com/ we started 2023 with about 1.8million users and started 2024 with about 1.5million

Though I'm not sure how accurate mastadon-analytics is - I'm open to other sources if they show otherwise

Mastodon Analytics

How many users, active users, servers are on Mastodon?

Mastodon Analytics

@austinphilp

>I'm not sure how accurate mastadon-analytics is

the site says they use the official numbers from https://api.joinmastodon.org/statistics

other sources show similar numbers for the complete fediverse, where mastodon is a big part of

@taylorlorenz The Arabs financed Musk and gave him clear instructions: "kill Twitter". He delivered.
@taylorlorenz Good job doing a softball interview with a nazi. I'm sure that is contributing to this trend. A+
@taylorlorenz Facebook's stability in all this is quite a disappointment.
@taylorlorenz lovely!! twatter has gone down the toilet!
@taylorlorenz anyone we else feel increasingly less admiration for each new crop of quitters? Like I’d be ever less likely to want to buy your book or attend your seminar.
@taylorlorenz Elon Musk is another stable genius.
@taylorlorenz does this imply an overall decrease in social media apps in general?
@taylorlorenz so what I'm seeing is that xitter dragged down all the others?
