@arstechnica A friend just got a notice about his Subaru that the warranty had been partially extended, because some cars hadn't had the system upgrade to allow them to connect to 4G and 5G cellular systems, so they'd keep trying to connect to 3G and drain the batteries.

He didn't know his car even had a cellular connection, and nobody but Subaru and the recipients know what data is being exchanged.

@arstechnica GM just gave me a reason to consider buying one of their cars.
@arstechnica wow, and some drivers didn't even know the car uploaded data!
For comparison my Nissan asks every time you start it if you are OK with uploading data, to be compliant with UK law. Fairly sure it also can't be transferred to another party. (ironically Nissan are also turning that off, but that's due to 2g/3g switch off and they're cutting costs early on old models)
@sldrant The VW I have warns that it’s uploading stuff. I can reduce the data but I don’t see how I can turn it off entirely without finding the antenna and breaking it.
@nivrig I can accept or decline, though not sure quite what terms either are tbh.
@nivrig @sldrant if you have a sos-button, you won' t be able to turn it off. All newer cars in the EU (since last year (?) have this system in their type approval, so it would be illegal to disable the system.
@1peewee @nivrig oh no, my cars are way bolder than that
@1peewee @nivrig but also, that's an emergency piece of data, not your daily acceleration, braking, distance and maybe location data

@sldrant @1peewee I hadn’t heard of the SOS function, but I found the button on the car now 🤣 Cheers! I didn’t mean I’d actually ever break the hardware though.

I checked the settings and everything is switched off except the emergency function. I can disable it too though, and the eSIM entirely. Happy enough with that.

≤pipe-dream≥Two Raspberry Pi 5s (or similar for redundancy) and a bunch of Arduinos as an Open hardware/software car management rip and replace for OEM car/engine management spyware and loom</pipe-dream>

(Yes, I know, cheap hardware but v. costly software and labour costs)
