@arstechnica wow, and some drivers didn't even know the car uploaded data!
For comparison my Nissan asks every time you start it if you are OK with uploading data, to be compliant with UK law. Fairly sure it also can't be transferred to another party. (ironically Nissan are also turning that off, but that's due to 2g/3g switch off and they're cutting costs early on old models)
@sldrant The VW I have warns that it’s uploading stuff. I can reduce the data but I don’t see how I can turn it off entirely without finding the antenna and breaking it.
@nivrig @sldrant if you have a sos-button, you won' t be able to turn it off. All newer cars in the EU (since last year (?) have this system in their type approval, so it would be illegal to disable the system.
@1peewee @nivrig oh no, my cars are way bolder than that
@1peewee @nivrig but also, that's an emergency piece of data, not your daily acceleration, braking, distance and maybe location data

@sldrant @1peewee I hadn’t heard of the SOS function, but I found the button on the car now 🤣 Cheers! I didn’t mean I’d actually ever break the hardware though.

I checked the settings and everything is switched off except the emergency function. I can disable it too though, and the eSIM entirely. Happy enough with that.
