it's official, threads is entering the fediverse! we still have a long way to go, but this is our first major step towards the interoperability commitments we made at launch.

if you enabled federation, you will also see your replies to this post in the fediverse. try it out! to find the setting, go to Profile > Account settings > Fediverse sharing to opt-in
check out the link below to learn more about the engineering challenges of building fediverse support from our own @christophersu and @sblackst πŸ™Œ

Threads has entered the fediverse

Threads has entered the fediverse! As part of our beta experience, now available in a few countries, Threads users aged 18+ with public profiles can now choose to share their Threads posts to other…

@0xjessel @sblackst @christophersu What are the plans for the roll out in Europe?
@0xjessel @sblackst @christophersu One thing which I find interesting about this is the concept of a non-federated post. Although there are surely threads.net specific considerations, it also reminds me of the option in the Hometown fork of Mastodon which lets you post locally.
@0xjessel @christophersu @sblackst

Any reason why mstdn.ca is unable to federate with threads? They did not block threads, the admin is saying that they are being blocked from your side.
It's the largest instance in Canada.

Looking into it! Thanks!!
@0xjessel Very cool and very exciting! A lot of people said it would never happen but in less than a year after Threads was first announced we're actually here!

@0xjessel

So your cloned post here on Mastodon is about 12 minutes old as I type this

Will my reply propagate back over to your original Threads post?

Otherwise there is *no* "federation" -- no matter how many times you use the word

Ready?

And...

...post

@FinchHaven @0xjessel I'll answer since it's unlikely Jesse will (for now). Currently when users opt-in to the Federation beta, it says that replies will not be visible until later. All that said, things are moving fast so hopefully in a few weeks this will be possible!

@codybrom

I've been replying continually to Mosseri's cloned #Threads posts over here on #Mastodon since mid-December, so I'm well-aware of exactly how all this works

Or doesn't work

In a few weeks (or less the way things are going) it'll be time to #DomainBlock #ThreadsdotNet and clear my timeline of all this noise

cc @0xjessel

@codybrom correct, that's the more difficult flow to build so that's coming later
@0xjessel Congrats, Jess! I know this has been a huge undertaking.
@0xjessel good to hear that. Let's see how Meta will influence the fediverse and if the fediverse will influence Threads.
What a time to be alive! Thank you and the rest of the team for keeping this promise. Very excited about where we go from here πŸ™ŒπŸΌ
Congrats!!! This is a major step!!
I'm switching back and forth between here and Mastodon to test it out. There's a bit of a delay, but pretty cool to see it working.
It’s hereeeeee! Or at least step 1 πŸ™Œ
@0xjessel testing to see if my comment shows up on Threads
Trying out the reply here.
Congrats to the team. A big step.
Congrats for the launch!

Reporting a small bug here that the button doesn't get enabled if the browser window was at a specific size
@connexinet would liking your own posts from a different platform be as terrible as liking it on the same platform?
