I still think the most under-reported, most holy shit tech story of the last 5+ years is how good e-bikes have gotten and how much more affordable a decent e-bike has become.

E-cars and trucks are a nice change but mostly meh. E-bikes, tho? They are magic.

They deserve subsidies and way more press attention.

@ryansingel

yes, but the lack of parts standards is pretty awful right now

good luck finding parts when something wears out in 5-10 years

We Have A Huge Problem With Ebikes....

YouTube

@joriki @ryansingel

I'm getting flashbacks to 1990s electric devices. Everything had their own standard from telephones to printers to whatever. Had a box (a big one!!) full of chargers and I had no idea to what most of them belonged to. Thank gods and EU for USB.

Hopefully it doesn't take 30 years to get ebikes standardised: my knees aren't getting any younger and I would like to be able to repair my hypothetical ebike.

@iju @joriki @ryansingel This is why I'm a big fan of buying a conventional utility bike, or hardtail mountain bike with disk brakes. And then fitting a moderate conversion kit with a rear hub motor. 350-500W, 20mph. The chainset doesn't wear out any faster, you can replace bits, get new batteries, and so on. And it's still a bicycle.

I did something similar with my first e-bike which was a converted xtra cycle. When the e-bike part fell apart, I converted it back to a traditional cargo bike

@ryansingel @iju @joriki Mine's a Genesis Tour De Fer with a YosePower 36v-350w. With everything turned up to max. And a big rack/basket on the back.

Tesco had offers on so today, it was 7 bottles of wine and a bunch of groceries. My record is probably 36 cans of Stella.

@ryansingel @iju @joriki But then I have friends who are seriously into downhill trail riding with E-Bikes. I'm sure it's hilarious but the bikes are always in bits and then discarded because something crucial (like a battery) is unobtainable. £3k upwards is not a disposable item.

But then, motorcycles.
