How often do you create a separate vault for new projects?

For about two years, I practiced storing all my notes in one place: daily notes, lecture, meetings. Even content for my hobby sites. It was convenient for me when I had a couple of thousand notes stored in one vault, strictly organized into folders.

Now I have 8 separate #obsidian vaults, of which at least two are always open. The vaults have different themes, which serve as an indicator of what I should be focusing on at the moment.

@pink_doublethink I create as few vaults as possible.

1. One for work, to respect my contract.
2. One shared with a friend for a mutual project, since it doesn’t make sense to live within my main vault (though even that I’m rethinking…)
3. One for literally everything else.

Well, and one for testing things on the side but that doesn’t count because it doesn’t used for real vaulty things.

But it really comes down to personal preferences and personal context.

@pink_doublethink I'm still at The One Vault to Rule Them All stage but I have about 10 example vaults that I've downloaded from various sources with which I experiment
@pink_doublethink I have a couple separate ones. One for work, one that is my Second Brain, and on that is for notes on a particular topic on a class I'm taking. I generally have folders for Daily and Notes. I haven't felt the need for a bunch of subfolders as I don't look at the folders often, search is good and notes are linked.
@pink_doublethink I currently have one, because currently I simply don't need more. Even if I have to, I would use the PARA method i.e. splitting some notes according to where belong to.
@pink_doublethink what’s the biggest change you’ve realized from changing set-ups?

@georgedpr
Attempting to identify a single major advantage is always an oversimplification. It's like trying to pinpoint the ONE biggest advantage of Obsidian over Word.

But if one were to try, it would be the specialization of repositories. A big project in my life equates to a separate repository with its own logic.

Working on a specialized repository allows me to focus solely on those notes.

@pink_doublethink I would agree with you in part. I do feel like there can a single catalyst that makes you change though not always. Specialized repositories; different tools for different jobs. Do you theme the vaults differently so you tell by color and/or different plugins?

@georgedpr Yes, I use different themes. Some themes have various additional built-in features.

The storage systems also vary in their file storage structure. In some places, everything is in the root folder and linked by tags. Elsewhere, a deeply entrenched folder system has already taken root.

@pink_doublethink Interesting. Thanks. Happy organizing.
