Woo-hoo, this is it! 🎉 Let’s celebrate! 🥳 If you live in the USA, today is Earth Overshoot Day for 2024!!

That means we’ve used our entire carbon budget in this country for the full year. We have exceeded our Ecological Footprint.

So, as of today, no one will be driving ICE cars or flying on airplanes. All our fossil fuel power plants are shutting down until next January. No more single-use plastics for the rest of the year. Everything is getting delivered by bicycle or on foot, and —

— wait, what? It doesn’t mean that?

It means nothing changes at all? You mean we’ll still be polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gases and poisoning our bodies with microplastics?

Nothing changes? Nothing??!!

Shit.

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. This deficit arises from liquidating stocks of ecological resources and accumulating waste, primarily carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

On a global level, Earth Overshoot Day in 2024 is expected to be around August 1.

A country’s overshoot day is the date on which Earth Overshoot Day would fall if all of humanity consumed like the people in that country. The chart above shows specific dates of overshoot for several dozen major countries.

@breadandcircuses

Thank you for the posts.
But please don't post "see comments below" in alt text, but explain what's seen on the picture.
Alt text is an accessibility tool, so people with screen readers can have access to what sighted people can see.

@breadandcircuses
Put my version in this alt text (because too long for post).
Please edit your's.

Warum sollten Fluggesellschaften Hardware bauen? Und Pan Am war doch 2021 schon 30 Jahre tot?

@Life_is @breadandcircuses

@MugsysRapSheet @breadandcircuses

Airbus und Böing bauen züge. Pan Am fliegt dann damit.

@breadandcircuses We (Canada) celebrate tomorrow. *sigh*
@breadandcircuses we'll have forgotten it by earth day 😞

@breadandcircuses this really isn't your problem, but if anyone happens to know why this post is getting matched by this filter configuration, I'll owe you a solid thank you. I have no clue how this could be matching, and I almost missed this post because of it.

(the filter's title no longer entirely matches its content, some of the items are there to help manage my mental health)

@draeath @breadandcircuses Hi draeath, your filter matches the alt text in the image, as 'Israel' is in your filter as well as the list of countries in the alt text.
@kritischelezer @breadandcircuses Thank you! Good spot, I don't think I would have figured that out, nor did it even occur to me that it might apply to what I would consider metadata.
@breadandcircuses It looks like lives are about to get shorter due to plastic in the bloodstream.

Landmark study links microplastics to serious health problems

People who had tiny plastic particles lodged in a key blood vessel were more likely to experience heart attack, stroke or death during a three-year study.

These calories come from somewhere too 😁

@breadandcircuses ooh, ooh, we've got another month here in NZ, we can party like it's the end of the world! Oh, hang on...
@breadandcircuses
Are there developed countries that don't overshoot?
@breadandcircuses In Canada ours is today. But we will pat ourselves on the back in smug congratulations because the only thing we care about is being better than the USA.
@breadandcircuses I remember only a few years ago this happened in August.
Continuous infinite growth for the $$$!
