In the life of my last toot, it occurs to me that many of you aren't Australian, and probably don't know the song "We are Australian ". It is weirdly unique as a nationalistic song from any country, that remains well loved (despite our documented issues with racism, and asylum seekers), whilst being fiercely inclusive. Arguably more inclusive than the country that loves it. Like - I'm going to reply to this toot with the whole chorus. It's actually uplifting.
We are one, but we are many. And from all the lands on earth we come. We share a dream, and sing with one voice: I am, you are, we are Australian.
Come on - like - that's not militaristic, or saying we're fantastic: it's saying we're united despite being different. How many nationalistic songs of any country are like that?
You can see why some think it would be a great national anthem - but, I can't get over there not being any one verse that would be suitable to stand alone that way.
