Wrote a little intro piece about the beauty I find in shorter video games such as #Cocoon #GoneHome and #KatanaZero —among others.

The Beauty of Shorter Games

I grew up during the revival of the video game movie tie-in boom of the 90s, after the dust settled from the video game industry crash in the early-to-mid 80s. The ability of movies and video games t…

@doomski A Short Hike was such a charming little escape for me. Gris was another "short" game I loved and found to be perfectly whole, rich, and meaningful. Anyway, lovely reflection you wrote--thanks for sharing.

@handmade_ghost 100% A Short Hike was such a pleasant experience. It reminds me a bit of what I thought animal crossing was when I first had the series described to me as a kid.

Yes to Gris! I thought it did a great job at conveying emotions that can be hard at times to express and experience. While different in theming, Jusant I also got emotional playing due to its visual storytelling alone. I'll admit though I did not engage with the written lore as much as I maybe should have in Jusant.

@doomski Animal Crossing is my quiet happy place. The original AC was slow gaming in the best possible way. I've not played Jusant, but I'll have to see if I can find a way to play it (I mostly play on my Switch, but I have access to a PS5). I love strong, evocative storytelling. It's amazing to me how some games can build so much in such a short amount of time.

@handmade_ghost Yes! It's really special when you can find a game that feels like a warm blanket. I definitely felt that way playing Ori and the Blind Forest due to the environmental visuals, bounciness of Ori, and the score by Gareth Coker *chief's kiss*.

You're so right about stories that challenge us and cause us to reflect on our own experiences, especially one's paced so quickly. While it's not game related, I think that is why I've always really enjoyed Shirley Jackson's writing.

@doomski Oh, yes, Shirley Jackson has a gift for this. We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a favorite of mine.
@handmade_ghost yes! I actually picked that up a few months back :D. Though I'll admit I haven't gotten to it yet.
