abadideait took a very long time, but I finally got through every last word of the Fellowship of the Ring in Dutch. My per-page reading speed had definitely improved by the end.
the next time I read this book it will be in Chinese, so help me gods (definitely not ready for that, though.)

@mrcsno it wasn't my vocabulary that was lacking at this point but my ability to just read straight through something without thinking too hard
(not that LOTR doesn't manage to pull out a lot of especially obscure words, of course.)

Garlic Pickles@0xabad1dea I remember doing the same thing with Foundation in Spanish. To me, the biggest difficulty was all the semi-archaic words and the differences between literary wordings compared to everyday speech. Even if you have a lot of experience reading in that language in other contexts, it's a totally different beast.
