My hope for my dead SSD is that only a voltage regulator kicked the bucket. Unfortunately there are no earthly components on these SSDs. So I have ordered another SSD of the same make, but with lower capacity, in hopes of using it as a donor for the magic what-I-believe-are-LDOs. Wish me luck. If you have suggestions I am all ears. Unless its “you should -also- create backups of those keys.” in which case I will ignore this remark.. the victim is a Crucial 1000MX500SSD1.

I decided to update servers, which included moving a 2.5” ssd in a cd caddy with a slim-sata cable attached. I modified the power plug in 2016 because the (HP) servers provide a floppy power plug, and not the big 5 1/4 inch device power plugs. I clearly remember thinking “be aware to plug into 5v in new server”. Well, I now know that a Crucial MX500 will work on 12v for about an hour.
The really bad part is that the dead SDD has a keyfile on it to unlock the storage. And somehow I did not keep a copy of that file.
