Who among you runs long distance in Vibram FiveFingers? I'm looking for model recommendations. I absolutely love my KSO Evo, and it's the best shoe I've ever run in, but I've found that I can put barely 300 kilometres' worth of training on them before the sole wears through.

(Boosts ok.)

@xahteiwi I run marathons. Currently rocking the V-Run but have had several, including Bikila. Tbh, I have the same wear issue as you. But I cheat and periodically paint on a new sole with shoe goo and I generally now get about 1200 k.
@xahteiwi (which horrifies my run club friends who replace their traditional shoes at 3-500 km)
@binford2k @xahteiwi this actually makes sense to me. I think it's the cushioning that goes, not the sole.

@plaindocs Which we non-cushioned runners don't care about. 🙂

@binford2k

@xahteiwi @binford2k exactly. I currently run cushioned, but am quite interested in switching.
@binford2k Huh! I have no objections whatever to extending the shoes' longevity, rather than replacing them. What product do you use to repaint the sole?

@xahteiwi brand name Shoe Goo. Seems to work ok 🤷

(On runway now. Will follow up later if needed.)

@xahteiwi KSO EVO for summer. I get about 500km from them. V-Run for winter to add running. Usually at about 800km the forefoot wears through in them. Bikila EVO about 600km (softer rubber in the soles). And very occasionally no shoes at all, which I love doing.
@xahteiwi I have no experience with long runs but have you maybe looked at https://www.leguano.eu barefoot shoes as an alternative (like the Spinwyn model)? They aren't toe shoes but also non-cushioned and lightweight. The company claims that the sole is very robust and durable. I own both Vibram KSO Evo and Leguano Active and so far the latter survived longer.

@kaspi Hmmm interesting! No, I hadn't heard of those before. I wouldn't mind that they don't have toes; I do occasionally run in Skinners too. I'll see if I'll give them a try — thank you!

@xahteiwi Leguano also gives a three year free repair guarantee but unfortunately (and as to be expected) it doesn't extend to the soles for obvious reasons.

Happy running!

@xahteiwi I wear the Treks most for everyday and occasional hiking. Lasts a few years.

However, I don't think most FiveFingers are supposed to be thick enough for long-distance endurance.

@ShrikeTron I do realise that the KSO Evo is intended for training and fitness (as in, you'd wear it to the gym, rather than on the trail). Other FiveFingers should last about twice as long.

But through this thread I learned about these, and might give them a try: https://www.leguano.eu/aktiv-winter-schwarz

(Not sure if available in your location, though.)

@xahteiwi
I know you're asking about Vibram and I'm diverting a little. Since you talk about sole toughness and minimal footwear, have you considered Xero shoes?
I've been training (and walking and everything) solely in them for almost a year now and it has been fantastic.
They have a 5000 miles warranty on their soles.
@fo Ooooooh *excellent* tangent! I looked into their products a while ago but then they wandered out of my sights. Do you run in the huaraches they originally started out with (if I remember correctly), or in closed shoes?

@xahteiwi I run exclusively in closed shoes, but it really is a personal preference. On my marathon, at the end, I crossed path with a runner, running with their sandals, so it can be done!

Their shoes includes straps (inside the shoe cover, look at black straps in photo) resembling huarache style. (make sense??)

I run in their HFS: https://xeroshoes.com/shop/shoes/hfs-men-clr/. It is in clearance right now because they launched a second version (I’ll let you compare if it's something you're interested in).

Ready to set your feet free on your next run? Wide toe box, lightweight, flexible, durable, and affordable. You might say "Holy __ __!" when you put it on ;-)

Xero Shoes
@fo Turns out they're just having a clearance sale on their Genesis huaraches, and my size is still available, and they're under € 50 including shipping, and it's beginning to get warmer again here so running with skin exposed won't be an issue for much longer, so I'll give them a go. Thanks for the reminder!
@xahteiwi that awesome! Let me know when you have tried it!
@fo Did my first run in them today. Just a quick 6½ km dash to see how they feel. Not bad, really! Very interestingly they feel a bit strange when walking, but perfectly nice when running. I'll see how I do with them on longer runs.

@xahteiwi awesome!

Tell me, for walking, do you usually wear minimalist shoes?

@fo My regular walking shoes are classic Chucks. Those are definitely "minimalist" in terms of arch support, but they do have a thick sole.

@xahteiwi I don't know them... it would have explain the weird feeling when walking...

In any case, I'm glad you tried and you seem somewhat satisfied!
