Lemmy, is there a treasured piece of content that you stop yourself from going back to "too often" so as to not dilute it? - lemm.ee

I do this for a few things, movies in particular. For me most recently, I’m planning on watching Bo Burnham’s Inside this weekend, for the first time since I watched it shortly post-release. I wasn’t really intending to wait *checks watch* nearly 3 years on that one, but I definitely felt it needed some space before a rewatch. Anyone else treat certain pieces of media similarly?

Most comedy specials, the George Carlin post today reminded me of that. If you listen too frequently they’ll lose their punch, and you’ll stop listening to what they’re saying. Every few years I’ll listen to him (and a few other comedians) and it reminds me of everything
Gotta do a Bill Hicks listen through every few years myself.
Add Mitch Hedberg to the pile, while you're at it.
  • [game] Donkey Kong Country 1/2/3
  • [anime] Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
  • [anime] Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

The games are part of my childhood, and they aged really well, so if I don’t stop myself from playing them all the time the muscle memory kills all the joy from playing.

Same thing with the two anime series - I love both but it has been a few years since I watched either.

Love both those anime!

I have rewatched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann twice since I originally watched it in 2014, and it held up.

I also occasionally watch the final fight of the Lagann-hen movie on YouTube and it still holds up.

Yup, it aged really well, too. FMA:B too.

One TTGL episode that I occasionally watch (even if avoiding the rest of the series) is ep11, when Simon snaps off his grief and guilt. It’s amazing how the right context makes even something as silly as “ore wa ore da!” (I’m me!) sound awesome.

Sometimes I feel like I should rewatch FMA B but then I’m like, nah I still remember it perfectly. To me it’s just a perfect execution of what a story should be.

Lord of the Rings - Battle for Middle Earth. Great game from like 2004; there’s a super niche online community that still keeps the games downloadable and in great state.

On a completely different direction, if anyone is bored and wants to try K Dramas, check out Crash Landing on You - it’s about a woman who ends up in North Korea after a paragliding accident.

Watch Crash Landing on You | Netflix Official Site

A paragliding mishap drops a South Korean heiress in North Korea -- and into the life of an army officer, who decides he will help her hide.

Oh another one I just thought of. The Mass Effect trilogy.

Used to do it every year and got burned out, now every 3 years or so I jump back in and save the galaxy. Wait - this might be three years this summer!

How do the sequels compare to the original?
I still haven’t started ME3 for this reason.
Now I wait until Christmas before allowing myself to watch Die Hard.
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
If you can dodge a wrench, you can didn’t a ball!
Some have this one as a guilty pleasure, I say fuck that, this is a masterpiece.
Ehhhh, to a limited extent, Christmas movies. But it’s only partly so it doesn’t get diluted, it’s also because they’re kind of meant to be something to make the season a bit happier. They don’t work as well outside of the holidays, so why bother?

I replay Morrowind maybe every few years, and I’m able to enjoy it every time I play.

As for movies, I saw barbarian in the theater and I have waited to watch it again even though I loved it, until just last month when I reunited with an old friend who loves weird horror movies, and it was so good. We actually watched terrifier also, and I hadn’t seen that in a couple years. It was so much fun to watch those movies sort of fresh with someone I knew would enjoy them, there were parts in both movies that surprised me again.

Pokemon games (red/blue) and Harry Potter novels. I have to wait long enough that I don’t remember every detail.
I’m playing blue right now! I just woke up the Snorlax with the flute. It’s so fun. This time I’m really into Hypno and Dugtrio
LEEEEEEEROY JENKINNNNNNNNS
Goodfellas, it’s my favorite movie ever and I want to keep the wonder of the first time I saw it alive as long as possible
•Hollow Knight, video game •Dune, book •Sandman, comic

The Dark Knight movie. Goddamn that is good. Maybe my top film of all time.

LOTR trilligy. I have extended versions on DVD and love them.

No, I go full throttle until I’m sick of it.
Yes, then you can forget about it for a decade or two and rediscover, rinse, and repeat.
Hot Tub Time Machine
The Shield, what a ride.
Bojack Horseman
BACK IN THE 90S I WAS IN A VERY FAMOUS TV SHOW
Final Fantasy VIII. I want to play it all the time and i wish i could erase the plot from my memory and play it again for the first time.

whoa

can you explain the plot of viii for me

Moody teen saves the world with his oversized sword-gun.

Full disclosure, this one is big on the nostalgia for me as well.

I have the opposite problem with FFVIII. The only thing I remember is:

You must be using…

Wait, I don’t know how to spoiler tag on Lemmy…

I remember the annoying protagonist, the stupid magic draw system, the crippling final dungeon. I don’t remember the plot.
I’m not saying it’s a masterpiece. It carries nostalgic and sentimental value for me. I like it.
Easily one of my favorites too. It was my first FF so I don’t see a lot of the flaws others claim to.

The Orville, Fresh Prince, and Firefly.

Been watching these three shows for many years; still haven’t seen every episode of any of them. One episode every few months/years is enough for me.

I fear for the day that I finally finish one of thm.

Don’t worry, you’ll never finish Firefly.
Few dirty doujins that always get me going, but I try not to use them too often lest they lose their charm
For me it’s books. I try not to read The Discworld series too often. Same thing with a few of my favourite books: Jane Eyre, Ivanhoe, Villette, etc. I also try to ensure a long enough gap (few years) between each read so that details of the books become a bit hazy in my mind and I can enjoy my read almost like the first time.

lol I can't. I have favorite series I go back to a couple times a year on audiobook.

I'm pretty sure I read everything Karen Rose has written at least 3 times last year, I read CJ Archer's Glass and Steele twice, and there are a bunch of others. Most TV shows I space out a bit though. (Except the Good Place. It's just so forking delightful.)

Not that I’m stopping myself from going back to it too often but for being such a popular song, Feel Good Inc. by Gorillaz somehow has managed to not lose it’s magic on me. I never search for it but every organic encounter in the wild stops me on my tracks and sends chills down my spine. A true masterpiece.

Also shoutout to the Marcus Layton & Nonô cover.

Hey, OP. Check out the podcast Dissect. They did a season breaking down each track of “Inside”. It was really interesting and really gave me a deeper appreciation for the entire project.
Oh neat. I’ll look into that. Thanks!
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Love it, but i can’t watch it too often because it’s so exhausting.
Cowboy Bebop (the anime series, not the live action), sadly only one season exists.
Halo reach, I’ll never get the feeling of my first run through back, but I forget smaller details when I wait a few years between playthroughs.
Surviving long enough in the unwinnable battle at the end that the game just straight up rips control away is always an accomplishment/heartbreak.

I have read my favorite series only three times. I cracked the seal (figuratively) during a low point caused by the pandemic, among other things.

So glad I saved it. Now I probably wont wait another 20 years to read it again, but I’m glad I kept it fresh for myself.

For me it’s Aliens. I hadn’t watched it in probably 15 years and did recently when the 4k version came out.

It was so, so worth waiting for. Watched it with my 3 oldest kids and it was their first time. Amazing time was had by all.

I do this with music… if one of my favourite nostalgia songs comes on and I’m not driving with the windows down in summer, it’s for sure getting skipped!
That’s some good discipline – good for you!

Some books and mangas, but mostly the Ghibli movies. Specially because when I watch one of them, I immediately want to go on a full Ghibli marathon.

They’re beautiful.

They’re beautiful.

In which aspects are you finding them beautiful?

Don’t get me wrong I am not a hater whatsoever, but I started watching them with my girlfriend recently and I’m not feeling it completely, I only watched Spirited Away before and I have the same feeling.

We have watched so far (in this order):

  • The Boy and The Heron

  • Princess Mononoke (this one was my favorite)

  • How’s Castle

  • My Neighbor Totoro

  • The art design is top notch I can agree with that.
