i just learned about DiGiDi and got very excited about it

it's a cooperative digital distributor / aggregator for getting your music online — owned by the people who use it. nonprofit / democratic / transparent / looks amazing at first blush:

is anyone on here familiar with them? any experiences to share, good or bad?

How DiGiDi works
@hilljam You know what? Fuck it, I'm gonna give it a shot. I'm thoroughly annoyed with the hoops I'm going through with getting cover song stuff approved.
@hilljam the bad news is that they mostly work with EU bands and you have to justify working with them from the US. I’m assuming “well you just seem neat” won’t cut it.
@RaccoonFink provide them the info! make the case! you can do it! 🖤🏆

@hilljam I had actually replied yesterday with this, and I woke up to an acceptance email…

“I've been frustrated with my existing distributor (RouteNote) and I'm trying to move to something less troublesome. I really appreciate that you are a co-op, it feels much more artist-friendly.

But I have no specific thing pushing me towards you other than your general ethos. Sorry to bother if that's not enough.”

I’ll play with it and report back.

@RaccoonFink hey, okay, that's awesome!! so they are receptive to a values-based appeal. as one would think they would be. very encouraging :)
@hilljam Yup, I tried uploading my oldest release, we’ll see how long it takes to go live.
@hilljam Approved and going to stores in less than 24 hours. Daaamn!

@hilljam It's *already* showing in Apple Music -- also, TIL that TuneCore cropped my cover?? Or at least, they used to do that kind of thing back in 2008 when I released it, lol.

Left-side is the old release, right-side is the new one, cover is from the exact same PSD as the original. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not only that, you get a proper report with the current state of things as it gets pushed to stores! I'm in love. 😻

An update on my experiment with #DiGiDi -- holy crap this is great!

They are consistently approving my metadata within a day, then I'm seeing my stuff show up in major streaming platforms just a few days after that (Apple Music is *overnight*!!!)

All that remains to be seen is whether my stats stick around after I remove these things from the old services. Supposedly you just need to leave everything up concurrently for a few weeks and then remove the old, and it'll be fine. 🤞

My scripts for prep have been getting increasingly elaborate now, too. 😅

* auto-generate right-sized cover art from source materials
* pick the right exported or mastered audio and auto-convert to flac/mp3/wav (with appropriate metadata)
* calculate total length
* auto-sync to my music share in Google Drive
* auto-sync to my Plex

It's getting to the point that I should probably make it be something other than a bash script…

DiGiDi also has an artist profile/portal that's a halfway-decent landing page. I might look into just migrating my linktr.ee stuff to it instead.

When they approved me, they asked me to fill out more of my profile. I finally got around to writing a bio that's more than 2 sentences. Not my favorite thing to do, but pretty happy with it now.

Obviously I'm still filling out the catalog, so the “newest release" is absolutely not, but it's not bad looking.
