The level of salt in Apple's press release says everything you need to know about the company and the people who run it 😑
@stroughtonsmith I’m wondering how much of this US based developers get access to… can we even test any of this stuff?
@its_john_davis @stroughtonsmith I’d assume this doesnt depend on developer location but User/App Store location.
@chkuendig So if I wanted to make a browser with a different web engine to distribute in the EU, can I do that if I’m based in the US?
@its_john_davis Presumably - but you can only release that version on the EU App Stores.
@stroughtonsmith I’m already looking forward to the WWDC slide where they’ll announce that 99.7% of app installs in the EU still go through the main App Store (as if that makes the whole thing irrelevant…)
@stroughtonsmith To be fair, if a third party was forcing you to weaken the security and privacy of your flagship product, you’d be pissed too.

@Strwpok @stroughtonsmith Say it with me:

App review
Is
Not
Security

@objc @stroughtonsmith but scanning for viruses and malware IS SECURITY!

@Strwpok @stroughtonsmith I genuinely cannot tell if you're being facetious or not

The OS can do that, that's what antivirus software is for

@objc iOS doesn't have antivirus software and its not been needed in the past because of the security that the EU want to weaken.

@Strwpok I am an iOS developer and hobbyist mobile security researcher.

App review is not security. Malware and scams get through regularly. Only the OS can provide real security. Apple can add antivirus to iOS if they want to, like every other platform has.

They don't want to because they want to keep forcing everyone through app review so they can control what apps we can use and take a cut of apps' transactions with users.

@objc @Strwpok Exactly! This thing is about greed and user control. Security doesn’t matter here but Apple will be pleased to see their marketing claims work out and people actually think the App Store is why iOS is safer than Android.
