This is everything I hate about Wes Anderson movies and I love it.
Truly, there is a checklist of EVERYTHING I HATE ABOUT WES ANDERSON FILMS, and Wes Anderson went down that list, checking every box, and said aloud, “Fuck you, Joe.”
@joesteel I’ll be the first to admit I’m an unsophisticated movie watcher, but I found this fucking painful to watch. I don’t get the hype.
@caseyliss @joesteel I found the whole movie delightful tbh. Just a simple time with charm. Admitted fan of Wes Anderson.

@imyke @joesteel Off the top of my head, I'm not sure if I've ever seen any of his other stuff, so this was probably me jumping in the deep end.

And, to reiterate, unsophisticated. 🙃

@caseyliss @imyke Well … I think it might be hard to start with Asteroid City. I am generally allergic to Wes Anderson’s whole *thing* so my expectations are definitely set by having seen his previous, much more acclaimed, films. Asteroid City had the most polarized replies of the three films I watched last night, so it’s not universally beloved.

@joesteel @caseyliss @imyke I'm a casual Wes Anderson enjoyer, and agree that Asteroid City was almost definitely not the place to get started with Casey 😅.

I really like how weird the film is but I do think it is less of an engaging narrative/story so so it is a bit harder to get into.

@joesteel @caseyliss it's easily the 'most' Wes Anderson movie
@imyke @joesteel @caseyliss
I loved it, butI found it his most conceptual/ philosophical, and not necessarily a "fun" watch.. Adults are stuck, children are potential, dreams are more lifelike, and everybody is just trying to get by. I know, I'm simplifying! But I do see him changing as a director, going from touching & feely plots with strongly conceptual visuals to being more and more conceptual, minimal and philosophical as a whole. Though the themes still seem similar.
@joesteel @caseyliss @imyke I love how the movie is in several “best movies of the year” AND “worst movies of the year” lists

@caseyliss @imyke @joesteel If you haven’t seen it, try the Grand Budapest Hotel — it’s a much more approachable movie.

One of my all time favourites, actually.

@caseyliss @imyke @joesteel
I would strongly recommend Fantastic Mr Fox and Moonrise Kingdom. They're both really easy to get in to and so full of joy and wonder. (Moonrise might also be considered a bit sad though..)
@caseyliss if you are curious to check out more Wes Anderson, I would start with Rushmore, which is probably my favorite movie of all time.
@caseyliss My favorite is Life Aquatic with Bill Murray. A fun adventure.
