@Gustodon Both?
@BackFromTheDud You must choose.
@Gustodon Not choosing is a choice!
@BackFromTheDud I appreciate your enthusiasm. 😂
@Gustodon There should always be an "All of the above" option. 😎

@BackFromTheDud That makes the poll too easy. ;)

I'm hoping people will react to having only two choices with a slightly different kind of thinking.

@Gustodon I see someone has already quantified the difference, and I'm in full agreement with them.
@Gustodon False dichotomy. Capitalism is a religion.

@Gustodon @BlahBlah

i suspect the function of religion is to legitimize crapitalism, but it is possible for an individual to be a crapitalist without having a belief in god 🤔

@maudenificent That's interesting.

@Gustodon

not “all religion” … mainly the monotheistic religions, based on (some or all of) old testament

did not “invent” ideas like slavery etc but they came to western culture mainly through the bible

(brief summary) e.g. genesis tells us time is linear (many indigenous cultures disagree) - linear time influences the way we filter the world

genesis/ garden of eden; - god decides who has a right to exclusive use of land, gives us right to exploit land (many indigenous cultures think of obligations not rights) - love is conditional, women are a pest, there is no such thing as a free lunch, an agriculture based economy is better than others…

these stories are given a good interpretation by decent people, but negative interpretations provide a template for the western worldview

and crapitalism would not survive without these (and other) assumptions

do right wing politicians really care about e.g. abortion? or even believe in god? or are these just issues used to gain political power?

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/sep/08/abortion-us-religious-right-racial-segregation

There’s a straight line from US racial segregation to the anti-abortion movement

Leaders of the religious right would have us believe that Roe v Wade mobilized apolitical Christians. The real story is very different

@Gustodon You can have evolution in religion to convert more people. Capitalism evolve to, but for more money, so ... 🤷‍♂️
@norihiori Based on that, can I ask which way you voted?
@Gustodon For Capitalism. For me, converting to an ideology is less destructive than absolute selfish, over a long period.
@Gustodon you are mssing the option, capitalism is a religion.
@blogdiva That would make it too easy, especially for super-bright people like you. 🍺😁

@Gustodon I'm only choosing Religion because:
* it's been around MUCH longer
* does damage everywhere including non-capitalist countries
* will outlive Capitalism

Otherwise, Capitalism isn't far from also being a top evil.

@Gustodon I honestly can't decide.
@SKleefeld I'm glad to learn that others are struggling with this, too. I was thinking about it this morning and it just came to this weird null. So, a Mastodon poll.
@Gustodon i accidentally voted and can’t undo it. Both are acts of colonization. I’m reminded of this which doesn’t mention religion, but i tend to think of religion as a tool of supremacy
@Gustodon
Religion is a certain system of views, conditioned by belief in the supernatural, which includes a set of moral norms and types of behavior, rituals, religious activities and the unification of people into an organization.
Capitalism is a social and economic system of production and distribution.
Initially, the concept of “capitalism” was used as an antonym in relation to the concept of “socialism” and implied a negative connotation.
@yurnidiot
@Gustodon
... I call capitalism the appropriation of capital by some to the exclusion of others.
Louis Blanc.
@yurnidiot

@Gustodon

Religion. It underpins companies by the people that profit from them.

Capitalism can be legislated, religion cannot (and should not be).

@Gustodon

One must escape a cult to understand the power of religion.

@Gustodon

Every 'ism' I would say!

That implies all religions and 'ismic' theories!

@Gustodon Wow, that's... way closer than I thought. Come on, Marxists... "The English Established Church, e.g., will more readily pardon an attack on 38 of its 39 articles than on 1/39 of its income. Now-a-days atheism is culpa levis as compared with criticism of existing property relations."
@Gustodon
I went with religion. Capitalism is, however unpleasant, rational and rational notions can be changed, argued against, disproved. Religion is not. Dealing with religion is like trying to model with water. All you get is wet. At least with capitalism you can wear gloves.
@Gustodon @modulux Capitalism is just a subclass of Religion 😉
@Gustodon 🤣 what a poll! I didn't get to vote but it's okay because I don't even know what I would have chosen. I mean 🤮
