Meta wants you to keep Facebook Link History on, here’s why you shouldn’t:

“Meta injects special “keylogging” JavaScript onto the website you’re visiting that allows the company to monitor everything you type and tap on, including passwords.”

Meet ‘Link History,’ Facebook’s New Way to Track the Websites You Visit

Facebook introduces a confusing new setting as the walls close in on Zuckerberg’s data machine.

@protonmail I block all Internet hostnames from my network that contain https://gist.github.com/b9AcE/345cfaa51f0b7884ddbdeb421936e4a6 these. No tracking for you, Mark!

@protonmail because of COURSE Facebook injects JS spyware. Because of course they do.
@protonmail The same happens on Instagram. Only difference is that there is no way to switch it off as far as I can see.
@OliverS Depending on your device you may be able to change the default browser for links in the media section of the privacy settings.
@protonmail I have changed the default browser to DuckDuckGo long time ago and use Proton VPN. However, it’s interesting that there is no opt out in Instagram and no mention in the Gizmodo article that it is in Instagram as well.
@protonmail Ich bin mir immer noch nicht sicher, ob er ein Cyborg oder ein Android ist.🤔
@protonmail I don''t even know why people are still using Facebook, or any META product for that matter.
This is proof positive that a leopard can't change its spots, and people want to allow Threads to federate with Mastodon!
@robchapman It takes time for things to change, especially when they are grandfathered in and people feel stuck in an existing ecosystem, we're happy to help share advice along the way and provide privacy by default alternatives whenever possible.
@protonmail @robchapman
Do what I did and just block Threads in its entirety from your Mastodon feed.
@drakenblackknight @protonmail I blocked the Threads.net by adding it to my own imported 'Domain Block List .csv file when the whole thing was first mooted
@robchapman @protonmail
Oh, I just added it to my uBlock Origin and NextDNS blocklists right alongside Meta's other properties, "brand x," and TikTok/ByteDance.
@drakenblackknight @protonmail Oh right, I don't use Ublock - I just blocked it here, but I can see how that would also work. I let Brave's shields block everything else I don't want, and it does it very well.
@robchapman @protonmail
I have it up on Brave's shields, too. Can never have too many redundancies in case Raymond Hill stops working on uBlock.
@drakenblackknight But keep in mind that depending on your instance setup, domain blocks in mastodon are just mutes. Your own posts can still be boosted over to threads once they start full federation.

@robchapman @protonmail The worst and possibly least easy reason to get "rid off facebook" is the old "everybody is on Facebook" thing.

A good example is WhatsApp. Years later, I'm still fighting to get my ecosystem to switch to Signal. People don't think it's important and don't see why they should. They just see that "it works, so why change?"

@zorangrbic @protonmail I left Whatsapp after Facebook got its claws in then unveiled the new T&C's which included 'what they would be tracking'. getting some people to switch was easy, but others would use the 'well i have nothing to hide, so what does it matter' argument - and all I can do is shake my head!
@protonmail
Crazy.
This gets out of control. Greed, worth over $100+ billion and still not satisfied.
@protonmail Just more thought policing by the greed tyrants.
@protonmail Imagine that all non-default browsers did this.
@protonmail
Isn't keylogging illegal in this situation? Shouldn't be Meta brought in a court if justice for this?
Shouldn't be EU Court of Justice notified about this?

@X_BSD @protonmail

When _isn't_ FB not facing a lawsuit? Just because it's not publicly announced on the tube- doesn't mean it isn't happening in real life..

@protonmail What's wrong with his face?
@earwigplanet @protonmail Nothing, it's the face of arrogance and "fuck you all".
@earwigplanet @protonmail «it's called prison pale» (cit.)
@protonmail my FB is frequently freezing my account believing it to be hacked - or is it censorship (due to postings about genocide in Gaza?)?
@protonmail is an excellent source of a variety of services
@bretonio Thanks! Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions about any of them.
@protonmail
I'll continue to avoid any Zuckerberg products forever. He stole and sold plenty of my data already, and I'm determined he will never make another dime off of me.
Microsoft is adding a new key to PC keyboards for the first time since 1994

Copilot key will eventually be required in new PC keyboards, though not yet.

@protonmail

Zuckerberg: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard
Zuckerberg: Just ask
Zuckerberg: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS
[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?
Zuckerberg: People just submitted it.
Zuckerberg: I don't know why.
Zuckerberg: They "trust me"
Zuckerberg: Dumb fucks

@protonmail reason number 2254 that I stopped using Facebook and deleted my account.
@protonmail Except the JS injection happens regardless of whether Link History is enabled, rendering your toot misleading
@protonmail I know it’s not, by far, the same thing but there’s some irony on it.

@protonmail
Using this as a reminder to dig through and see what's new that I have to disable.

Glad I'm using uBlock (and frequently Tor or ProtonVPN.)

@protonmail It seems increasingly clear that the only solution to data predation will come from generating vast amounts of random/phony data and flooding those places who gather our data. A technological version of "baffle them with bullshit."
@protonmail Main fronter recently started using Threads, it's connected with their Instagram, and she rarely uses that. so.. I just know that most of these, data privacy...well you don't have a lot of control over that..
@protonmail @mjt Yet another reason to add to the very long list of reasons I avoid everything associated with Meta/FB.
@protonmail Does NetShield block those types of trackers too?
@protonmail despite me not allowing Link History, I still get targeted ads and them tracking if I clicked an ad, even if it was by accident. And one of them was me clicking to report that it was a fake company selling bogus product. So that's annoying. No way to clear the ad history either.
@protonmail We’re talking about what people shouldn’t do? I’d put using FB at the top of that list.
@KolokokoBird Great advice, although it takes time for a lot of our community members to transition off of big tech, so we're happy to share tips and advice along the way.
Firefox Multi-Account Containers – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US)

Download Firefox Multi-Account Containers for Firefox. Firefox Multi-Account Containers lets you keep parts of your online life separated into color-coded tabs. Cookies are separated by container, allowing you to use the web with multiple accounts and integrate Mozilla VPN for an extra layer of privacy.

@protonmail y’all are typing passwords into the in-app facebook browser?
@protonmail I use Firefox with Multi-Acount Containers extension. I have a dedicated container for FB, so the only website FB sees is FB.
@protonmail the pictured ’man’ is a parasite

@protonmail Of course at this point the question becomes "why are you still using Facebook?", but the same could be said for Google, Apple, Microsoft, or A LOT of companies out there...

I can say, however, that the GDPR interaction I had with WhatsApp (they sent an e-mail to every single EU user which you had to reply manually, it was bonkers) was OK, here's hoping they're actually following through with it.

I wonder when will the EU drop a 10-ton brick on Meta...

@protonmail
I mean, this is exactly the level of gross I expect. Horrifying, thank you

@protonmail

I'm half surprised to learn Facebook is still out there. I knew Instagram was, but can't recall the last time I heard anyone mention Facebook.

Given that Myspace still exists though, I shouldn't be too surprised.
