@andrewnorthrocks @maxellxlii90 @chopaganda I've always maintained that the entire story was tenuously held together at best which is part of why it worked so well for new tales in universe over the years of narration
@LostReflector @andrewnorthrocks @chopaganda Definitely open to interpretation and imagination, lore theory, all that good stuff. Just didn’t even seem like an ending! “…And then there was a volcano” had some “somehow, palpatine has returned” vibes.
@maxellxlii90 @LostReflector @andrewnorthrocks But that enabled the ripping post-midnight throwdown. Had to be done.
@chopaganda @maxellxlii90 @LostReflector @andrewnorthrocks the post midnight throw down was glorious! As I said somewhere else on here, that third set had massive NYE ‘93 vibes for me as I celebrated 30 yrs of NYE shows. Melt, YEM and possum were all great.
@LostReflector @andrewnorthrocks @maxellxlii90 @chopaganda yeah the end of the official GH sequence is... Possum? The ending of the story is not very well articulated
@mrcompletely @LostReflector @andrewnorthrocks @maxellxlii90 @chopaganda I think they only ended it with Possum in the 88 version. McGrupp is the real ending (IMO), and then Divided or Possum could be tacked on I guess? Both 94 versions ended with Divided and I’ve always viewed those as the “definitive” versions.
@mrcompletely @LostReflector @andrewnorthrocks @maxellxlii90 @chopaganda but to Mr. C’s point, the ending is open-ended bc Gamhendge is a state of mind.
@Evdude @mrcompletely @andrewnorthrocks @maxellxlii90 @chopaganda but Possum is on the original recording of the thesis, not just tacked on to a live set so I think he did mean it to be there
@LostReflector @mrcompletely @andrewnorthrocks @maxellxlii90 @chopaganda I don’t think I’ve ever actually listened to that version…where can one spin that?

@Evdude @mrcompletely @andrewnorthrocks @maxellxlii90 @chopaganda here's a YT of it. DLs can be found in .net and r/phish threads I believe

@LostReflector @Evdude @andrewnorthrocks @maxellxlii90 @chopaganda yep, Possum is the canonical ending to TMWSIY, which is hilarious, since IMO it was clearly just the only other song he had ready and he shoehorned it in, but now here we are

The simplest *and* most accurate way to put it is: Gamehendge is whatever Trey says it is at any given time, and all performances of it with narration are equally Gamehendge.

Looking at it that way dissolves any tension around playing this or that

@LostReflector @andrewnorthrocks @maxellxlii90 @chopaganda the looseness helps the appeal to the raucous, oft drunken party crowd on New Year's Eve. No serious need to check for facts or continuity, everyone could just receive Gamehendge in the moment for how great it was
