@nivrig I find it's not even about money, it's the convenience. If I torrent a video then it's just a file that I can play on any device I want whenever I want however I want.

When I'm using a streaming service then I have to access it using a browser or whatever app they peddle, and the content I purchased could get removed at any time.

It's a strictly worse user experience all around. And I'm expected to pay for the privilege?

@yogthos @nivrig do you remember DVD with unskippable contents
@sl_carq @nivrig I sure do, was a constant reminder that you were punishing yourself by taking the legal route

@sl_carq @yogthos @nivrig Nope because I always used MPlayer that didn't even support the awful bytecode vm for that at the time, much less force you to use it. 😈

🖕 DRM

@yogthos @nivrig Oh, and if you really want the streaming experience, there's jellyfin or, if you're particularly masochistic, closed source crap like plex.
@nivrig They are pushing us more to use torrent than before. Anyway me not doing it anymore as I've some collection of movies I love to rewatch. Only using the Netflix plan of mobile for now for watching new movies. ₹149 per month. Not using any other streaming services. Still a lot of content to watch.
@nivrig Proud 7 seas Sailer! 🫡
@nivrig Pay extra for no ads in streaming services is essentially getting users to pay for something they will never own, whilst simultaneously getting them to sell themselves as the product being sold.
@nivrig
Or, what I did In 2015, find a streaming site that has literally everything for 8 bucks a month.
VPN or no, your ISP is gonna see those torrents.
My ISP threatened legal action and throttled me multiple times.
This solved it.
@nivrig archive.org - and not for entertainment but for learning( I am not A.I. I hope)
@nivrig honestly things wouldn't be so bad if I didn't STILL GET ADS AFTER PAYING. That's just the last straw for me. What the hell do they expect?

@nivrig

Seriously.

I don't pay for content that also has commercials.

@nivrig My Amazon Prime renewal dropped earlier this month. With the pending addition of ads on Prime Video, I'm seriously considering canceling it. I use the free shipping more often than I thought, but hardly watch videos on Prime. With the added $3/mo, it's now about on par with a Netflix account.

@nivrig

Perfect timing, I just got this email.

How much do we have to pay to get no ads?

Answer: 0$.

Starting to agree with those making "piracy is justified" videos.

Here's from the email...
"We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements."

@nivrig yeah, but that's not comperable

with torrents your might still have that file around in 20 years, even while offline

streaming will keep you spending all the time

@nivrig I don't regret paying for YouTube premium, as someone who watches a lot of YouTube.
@nivrig For $2.99 a month you can more than pay for a high quality VPN service.
@nivrig I'm honestly not sure I remember how (since I never did it... That I recall... If I did do it pretty sure it was back a long time ago.. Further than that... Long ago enough that the statue of limitations apply)
@nivrig Going to unretire my raspberry pi.
@nivrig And for ease of access: Slam them on a home server running Jellyfin, Plex or Emby.
@nivrig And also, paying for streaming services and still getting ads
@nivrig to all ye here who won't pay the streaming taxes anymore, please hear the gospel of real debrid. It's a pain to set up and you can't use it outside your home but it's like $10 for three months and has everything. Good luck to all and to all their favorite trash show.
@nivrig @beej I pay for the DVD/Blu-rays for that no ads experience.

@nivrig @phildini The right kind of piracy is a moral imperative.

If capitalism is trying to destroy it then you must steal it to save it.

@nivrig and yet, Paramount still plays ads on a subscription and soon Prime will do the same 🤬 It's like a torrent invite.
@nivrig paying for streaming and getting ads and a sanitized edit of the show
@nivrig Or I could just not watch TV, which is what I’m currently doing.
@nivrig Pie rates? Har!
I ALWAYS buy things directly from artists if and when possible. But… when the parasites interfere, I hoist the sails!
Wait. Are the people paying for streaming and, even so, being obliged to watch advertising?!
@Jener Amazon recently announced that Prime Video will now include ads, but you can upgrade for an extra $3 for ad-free.

@nivrig *cough* Kodi wirh easynews streaming *cough*

Wait until easynews do their regular $36/yr unlimited deal though, their normal prices are stupid.
