I've known three people who got COVID in the past two weeks. All of them posted photos of their events in the weeks leading up to their infection. Not one of them posted they had #COVID19.

I get tired of people saying "everyone's back to normal" and "I never hear of anyone sick." The social pressure for "normalcy" demands we share every crowded event and then hide our infections and illness.

If you're COVID-cautious, just realize you are not alone, no matter what your social media feeds show.

@augieray saw my 82 yr old mil at fred meyer yesterday unmasked - she has been incredibly careful for years but apparently now she is back to eating in restaurants and going everywhere unmasked... she is fully vaxxed and walks 5 miles a day - very healthy person but still...

@aliza @augieray My 73 yr old FIL just passed away from complications (soil-based sinus infection, extreme weight loss, etc) after his #SARS2 infection earlier in the year 2023.

It didn't help he was on chemo near the time of infection. He was in remission at his passing, for the nits.

Cherish your loved ones, especially when they choose to live dangerously.

@augieray

We will never overcome corporate/business buzz to "unalive" COVID. But we can create social/medical buzz to acknowledge it and help our friends and family be safe.

@augieray fortunately my friends post "disease status" a lot so it helps us stay aware.
@augieray Any post like this, which reminds me that I am not, in fact, alone, helps. Thank you.

@augieray

...and when they're ill they say it's a cold or a cough or "something going round", anything to avoid admitting it's unusual.

News reports that do mention a rise in illness tend to lump it in with other diseases even when the other diseases aren't rising, again presumably to avoid implying it's out of the ordinary.

@augieray
I wore a mask to a party the other day because my throat felt weird and a little sore. I got some shit for it from a few people, but all I say now is "you're welcome".
@augieray
I've been super careful, n-95 mask, fully vacced, etc., and was covid-free until this month. Had a dental appt. Difficult to get teeth cleaned while wearing a mask... So 8 days later, positive for covid. Tested negative again a couple of days ago (nine days quarantine). Still feeling lethargic, coughing, stuffy head/ fog-brain. I'm in my early 80s, so am sure it would have been worse (maybe much worse) without vaccinations...
@augieray Exactly! Was watching a news report about all the hospitals around here being at overcapacity b/c of a “mysterious respiratory illness” & no one would mention COVID-19 by name. As if there was a code of silence. They’d rather claim ignorance rather than admit being reckless. I’m fully vaxxed , boosted & masking everywhere. 😷✌️

@augieray I am #COVID cautious. I'm mostly the only one with a mask in the metro, specially after reading about long COVID; it's just not worth the risk. But I forgot my mask at work twice.

A week ago I went to the first adult party in I don't know how long, maybe a year or more, and after a very bad year. To be 100% honest, I didn't even think of using a mask :(

This week at least 4 other colleagues and me are/were sick with COVID. My ex and 2 other families too, as half her institute.

@mdione I hope you recover fully and quickly.
@augieray thanks, I'm back on my feet, but still positive, so WFH until I clear that up.
@augieray I don’t post pics on Social Media about events I attend, because I no longer attend any. And what pisses me off is that I would feel safe attending such events if only everyone was as Covid cautious as I am. 🤬
#CovidRuinsLives
@augieray you don't even need to go to events, being in an office with coughing "still sick but back at work"-people will/can be enough, and both of us maskwearers got hit by a bad fatigue (both boosted in November too, sadlol). Airfilters can only do so much in such a space. 🤷
