As much as I don't like Twitter, I do miss all the calendar sales that it used to drive. I'm down over a $1,000 of income that would have come from Twitter calendar sales. That sucks.

Northern Landscapes Calendar 2024

A year worth of landscape images from northern Minnesota. These photos, taken by landscape photographer and outdoor photography instructor Bryan Hansel, cover a wide range of subjects in the northland. For this year's calendar many of the images come from Cook County, Minnesota and Lake Superior. The images show sunrises from Artist's Point, waterfalls from the Temperance River and Cascade River, a sunrise near Hovland, a harbor scene from Grand Marais, fall color scenes from Cook and Lake Counties, and a peaceful cabin in the snow.

@bryanhansel Have you tried selling on Threads yet?
@sammydee I have. There's basically no response. It feels a bit like Instagram in that way. On Twitter, I had a few big names in Minnesota that would promote the calendar and drive sales.
@bryanhansel Good to know. Like Twitter, Threads feels more like a broadcast mechanism for larger accounts. Not much interaction with friends, but interesting posts from interesting people who I follow. So I guess the secret to 'success' there is to become an 'interesting person', and post fun things regularly so folks follow you. If you did that on Twitter I'm sure you could do it on Threads too, just might take a while. :) Good luck!
@sammydee if a few more Minnesotans move from Twitter to Threads, it would probably work, especially if certain ones do. I'm @bryanhansel over there.
@bryanhansel Since they just introduced their version of hash tags, maybe there's a Minnesota tag to follow / use? Or create one...
@sammydee I haven't found hashtags to be effective there. Mentioning "Minnesota" seems to get more traction. When I've used hashtags, the post seems to get less traction. Until they build hashtags out in the way Mastodon has, I don't think they are worth it.
@sammydee what if I am not an interesting person? Would I be a failure? @bryanhansel

@bryanhansel I'd have bought one of your great calendars, but unfortunately shipping to Europe takes ages and also comes with a hefty price tag 🤪

But apart from that, I think hashtags are the primary way to get attention for your posts here on Mastodon. And don't forget timezones: there is no algorithm so it may be a good idea to retoot your posts after some hours in order to reach a broader audience.

Good luck!

@riaschissl some of that time is that they have to print it. Lulu is print on demand, and that takes a week or two depending on the time of year. But shipping to Europe is spendy. I bought one of Alex Van Nes's watercolor calendars. It shipped from Europe to me in the US and was spendy. I love Alex's watercolors though. If you're looking for a good calendar shipping from Europe, I highly recommend Alex's.
@bryanhansel Would have considered it if 1) shipping wasn't so $$$ and 2) if the week started on a Monday. Splitting weekends across rows is a pain in the neck.
@ingram that's a tough one. Technically Sunday is the start of the week here.
@bryanhansel The US is an outlier there. Something like 160 countries start on Monday, 60 start on Sunday and rest are Saturday. Australia & New Zealand week starts on Monday, but 95% of calendars start on Sunday for reasons of tradition.
@ingram you can't satisfy everyone
@bryanhansel Is there an option to get the calendar-y part printed with a Monday start? Might open up the market for you. https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/days/first-day-of-the-week.html
What Is the First Day of the Week?

Is Monday the first day of the week, or is it Sunday? Did you know that half the world's population starts Sundays, and some even start on Saturdays?

@ingram not with the company that I use. They make the templates.
@ingram If I get some time maybe I can figure out a European company that does print on demand and ship to Europe. I'd have to figure out how that works with taxes and such, too. I don't know much about how oversea taxes work. Lulu takes care of all of that.
@bryanhansel Now down only $975 :-). Love the work on your web site.

@bryanhansel Just ordered one of your calendars! I enjoy the images you post so I’m happy to get 12 months worth.

Thanks

@bryanhansel I got one of these calendars as a present from my lovely boyfriend last year, I hung it up in my office and it has made me happy all year to see the photos.
@bryanhansel Good luck! (Book) Sales have tumbled for me too since leaving Twitter šŸ˜•
@bryanhansel When I order a couple of these calendars and I live on the other side of Minnesota, do you think it would make it by Christmas or no?
@MattPT they are printed on demand by Lulu, so I'd guess not. It usually takes a week to get printed and shipped.
