I’m ok to shit on Tesla but this is stupid title. This is not a recall this is an OTA update. What a stupid clickbait.

@dimillian I don't think it's an attempt to sensationalize; it's still customary in the auto industry to refer to these as recalls even if you don't physically have to bring the item in for service and the remedy is a software update.
@harpaa01 ahhh I didn’t knew that. Weird wording.

@dimillian @harpaa01 Yeah it’s technically accurate but to me it’s also misleading and clickbaity.

“Tesla recalls 2 million vehicles” doesn’t sound like an OTA update at all

@sjs What's misleading about it?

@harpaa01 Come on you don’t need it explained. Obvious connotations of the term recall without mentioning it’s only a software change makes for obvious sensationalism.

NYT did it right and the convenient context above illustrates how most think of a recall.

@sjs but that isn't what recall means.

Audi recalled my car a couple years ago and the fix was them mailing an addendum to my owner's manual with some extra information.

The auto industry uses the term "recall" to refer to things like this.

Just because you think “recall” means “in-person repair is needed” doesn't mean you've been misled. It just means the term "recall" doesn't quite mean what you thought it did.

@harpaa01 You’re confusing what it means with how it’s perceived by the masses. Nobody knows or cares what it technically means in the auto industry. We’re not talking about auto industry reports here but rather mainstream news headlines. Honestly if you don’t think this is purposeful sensationalism then you’re very naive. Clickbaiters gonna clickbait.
@dimillian I think “Recall” is the language used by the US regulator for issues like this. I have received a couple of recall notices from the regulator in the mail for my Tesla in the past and they were all resolved via OTA updates.
@dimillian I also find the title somewhat misleading. The software update could also be mentioned directly in the title and not just in the article 👍
@dimillian @taylorlorenz Yeah it's some legal BS in the states to call this a recall. I've had two OTAs to fix a “recall" and they also have to send you a letter in the mail.
@dimillian @taylorlorenz That’s not editorializing… it’s an official recall: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2023/RCLRPT-23V838-8276.PDF
@ojarjur @taylorlorenz it’s still called a software update. Do we call that a recall when Apple release a new iOS version?

@dimillian @taylorlorenz If it is in coordination with a government safety regulator, then yes that would also be a recall.

The mechanism of the fix isn’t what makes it a recall, the involvement of a government regulator makes it a recall.
