Holy shit. Yesterday, Liz Cheney suggested that the reason Tuberville filibustered all military promotions was so Trump could appoint their replacements, and within 24 hours he released almost all of his holds.

But not all of them.

It's an admission. They're really, truly planning a violent coup of U.S. democracy.

@msbellows I thought it was kind of an open secret that that’s why he was doing it. Or at least it’s not the first time I have heard that theory floated.
@MisuseCase Good for you! I hadn't heard it before.
@MisuseCase @msbellows it’s no different to what they did in the Supreme Court.
@BenAveling @MisuseCase Exactly. This time, we can't be naive enough to say, "oh well, there's no way Trump will win the election anyway so I'll just ride it out until after the election," as Obama unfortunately did.
@msbellows
Yes they are, and House Mouse Mike Johnson is only 2 heartbeats away from controlling the presidency and he just admitted to obstruction of justice for the J6 insurrectionists. Fascist move. afterall its not like they didn't have a noose waiting for Pence.
@msbellows
In case my American neighbours don't already know it, Trump is playing with fire! This is what happens when you politicise the military ... Adolf Hitler, Fidel Castro, Idi Amin, Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi, Myanmar’s Than Shwe, and the list goes on and on ...
@msbellows We've all been saying this for weeks. The holds were so these officers could be replaced with Trump loyalists.

@msbellows Someone postulated that it could also be to diminish the effectiveness/readiness of those upper ranks in the scenario of an international conflict.

The conservatives could use that as a "look what Biden and the Democrats did!" 100% ignoring the fact that everything is online/recorded and can thrown in their faces at a moments notice.

@msbellows I think this gives Tuberville way to much credit for his thinking ability.
@msbellows someone keeping track of all the rats jumping ship? Kev, bow tie guy, etc.?
@msbellows Right. Left off the highest level ones. None of this has been about abortion. It's about dictatorship. A small number of GOP senators could end this.
@msbellows yes they are and are very open about it. Making the firing of civil servants and replacing them with “ loyalist” sound like it is reasonable.
@lillyfinch @msbellows Yep. It's been out there for awhile, but now it finally made headlines.
@GottaLaff @msbellows the whole thing is so insidious….starting with Reagan….been screaming “1930’s Germany folks” since 2016..lost a lot of friends.

@msbellows

"And so together we shared the fate of all the failed democracies before us, joining those pitiful beings who had held the light of freedom in one hand, and put it out with the other."
SearingTruth

@msbellows I have the feeling the GOP and their supporters are walking blindly backwards to Christmas, but they themselves are the Turkeys, and will be served up with relish.
@msbellows
Can anyone explain for non-Americans? Is it likely we'll see a Republican coup come November 2024?

@nerese My suspicion is that this Republican senator was holding all the top military positions empty so that if Trump were to win a election, he could fill them with his acolytes so that, if anything jeopardized his power – riots in Portland, protests in DC, or even people simply telling him to leave when his term's up – they would obey his orders to turn the military against the American people.

I think they're dreaming if they believe the US military would do that, but who the hell knows any longer? But it's not that I think his plan would be successful, it's that I think it's incredibly troubling he has such a plan at all.

@msbellows So January 6th wasn’t enough of a clue-by-four ya’ eh?
@camstonefaux I mean, he didn't actually invoke the Insurrection Act then. That part of the plan failed. This is doubling down.
@msbellows - Oh for cripes sake, Capitol Police lines were overthrown, people DIED, and Congress was stopped (temporarily) with a GALLOWS for Mike Pence erected just outside of the CAPITOL, with multiple FELONY Convictions as a result - and you're friggin' worried about the INSURRECTION ACT being invoked by a lunatic? Fine, at least we certainly know now which side of the railroad tracks you walk on.
@camstonefaux Get over yourself. Trump did not manage to get the regular military to open fire on American citizens last time. He very possibly will manage to do that next time. So yes, I think his second term would be even worse than his first, because he now knows where the light switches are.
@msbellows (laughs in your face) That's a pretty pathetic argumentative with no real basis in fact(s). Because about the only thing we could possibly agree on is that the likely GOP candidate is worse than 99% of the possible DNC alternatives. But until the election, pass the salt... you can just lick it, while I apply it to the wounds we already suffered to this democracy.
@camstonefaux At this point I have absolutely no idea what the hell you're talking about, and I honestly don't care. I'm leaving the conversation and I wish you well.
