Beeper Mini is really good. My Android bestie is finally a blue bubble. Thank God. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beeper.ima&pli=1
Beeper Mini: Chat With iPhones - Apps on Google Play

Finally, get blue bubbles on Android!

@film_girl How trustworthy is that app? How did they accomplish this? I have… reservations.
@chartier @film_girl jailbroken devices and/or vms iirc

@film_girl @chartier oh my b! I remember original implementations requiring this, that's neat that they RE'd the protocol
@b3ll @film_girl @chartier I had just assumed access to iMessage server endpoints would be dependent on something signed by something derived from the trust root in the phone. You’re saying it “just” required reverse engineering the protocol?!
@ratkins amongst other things, looks to be based off older implementations of iMessage (in a similar vein to how Hackintoshes did it)
@b3ll I wonder how old the oldest phone is that is still capable of sending iMessages…

@b3ll @film_girl @chartier Useful to note, that they didn't reverse engineer it. They found a high school student who had done that and published it to GitHub via https://github.com/JJTech0130/pypush. They then purchased the project.

I’m very curious to see where all of this leads and if Apple attempts to block it.

Quinn Nelson put up a great video about the project & app.

@b3ll @film_girl @chartier I'm not sure violating the Terms and Conditions of a large scale web service qualifies as "neat" 😒
@chrisfinazzo @b3ll @chartier I personally always find reverse-engineering neat. ToS is irrelevant. A cool reverse-engineering method of something proprietary/closed is always cool in my book. Let the lawyers argue the rest (case law is typically not in the favor of the proprietary people), I think it is cool as hell that a high schooler figured out how to reverse-engineer iMessage.
@film_girl @chrisfinazzo @chartier huge +1, well said. The only worry I have is the more widespread usage of random other people’s Mac’s serial numbers. This was definitely a questionable part of the hackintosh scene
@chartier https://blog.beeper.com/p/how-beeper-mini-works — anecdotally, I’ve known Eric Migicovsky for over a decade and I trust him. But you don’t even have to use your Apple ID with it. They reverse-engineered it and it uses Apple’s servers.

@film_girl @chartier I can't imagine it will be too long before Apple changes their protocol to prevent 3rd parties from accessing it, "for security".
@jasonclarke @film_girl @chartier I have a hard time seeing how they can without blocking out any device not on the new current patched version of iOS.
@RickWilliams @film_girl @chartier That’s a good point. It would take years to do without dropping support for old devices. I wonder if they start the process now so they can do that in a few years?
@film_girl won't it be a drag to have yet another app in which to chat with people (just to avoid being a green bubble on iPhones) or am I misunderstanding how this works?
@film_girl I supported their kickstarter because it basically was a Raspberry Pi with a BlackBerry Keyboard that you can expand on and that’s my dream retirement phone. Email me and I will respond when I decide to have WiFi and I’ll write you a whole letter back.
@film_girl Thanks for the heads up! I have a recommendation to make to a few friends now.
