It remains utterly fascinating to me how many of you lot look at a 2700K light source and describe it as "not white"

Y'all gotta stop staring at screens all day

Is it yellow-ish? I suppose you could call it that.

"Yellow?" tf are you seeing.

I remain convinced people with this take have spent time in chronically underlit environments and haven't actually seen a well-lit space in their lives. If shifting to cool white lets you see better you don't have enough illumination.

@TechConnectify

I keep my house purposely underlit and yes I'd describe warmer lighting as more yellow than cooler lighting, which is more blue. I thought the comparative color was indisputable, but I'm even more taken aback by the hostility. So much anger because people accurately describe warmer light as being yellow compared to cooler light? Yikes. Guess I made a mistake subscribing on youtube and following here, I'll fix that right now. Sorry my opinion, which I didnt even express before now, is so offensive to you.

@kwsapphire by all means, feel free to eliminate me from your life.

But I am utterly and totally perplexed at how I am supposed to post things here on this website because it seems no matter what I do, if I let any of my personality leak out, people are mad.

@TechConnectify They're just letting *their* personality leak out
@TechConnectify I would ask myself, "do I really want someone that easily offended by a rant as a follower?"
@TechConnectify I've been following since the Transistors video, and I can at least say for myself that I wouldn't still be here if I didn't enjoy seeing your personality in the way you present. I'm at least one vote for "Keep doing what you're doing".
@TechConnectify @kwsapphire perception of light is an individual trait.
I have mostly 3200K lights here, but have 5600K in the kitchen, in particular under the cabinets.
Also, have a few 5600K video lights on the ceiling grid in the office

@TechConnectify

You seem like the kind of person who has been on the internet a long time, so I'm perplexed how you expect anything less. People on the internet can get mad at puppies and rainbows. You act like people are idiots for calling the obviously yellow thing yellow and expect nothing but likes and retoots? O_o

@kwsapphire oh look, a chart made with a camera that had its white balance set to 5000k.

(This time the snark is deliberate)

@TechConnectify

Fine, here's one with white balance set to sunlight.

2700-3000k is still yellow by comparison.

I am not wrong. :P I'm just wondering if you've got a bit of undiagnosed colorblindness.

@kwsapphire @TechConnectify I’m more and more convinced this is just a misunderstanding: if you set a light to 2.7k in a room lit in colder tones, it will be yellow, but set all the lights that way and you’ll see white.
@kwsapphire @TechConnectify Honestly I think it's more of a definition issue. For me, white and black are kinda like extrema, points you approach. In such an approach, a yellow-ish white registers as a form of yellow. The white is the modifier, the yellow registers stronger. If you see white and black as ranges themselves, then the yellow is the modifier of the white. Technically that is correct for light because it's always white biased to one of the colors. As such I agree with @TechConnectify on a technical level, but not everyone registers that mentally as a form of white for said reason. This is purely on a personal level and has nothing to do with actual objective reality.
@kwsapphire @TechConnectify And in this case for completeness, I am actually technically red/green colorblind.
@TechConnectify @kwsapphire 2700K is described as “warm white” by the people that make lights. Warm = yellow cast. Cool = blue cast. Sunlight is supposedly 3500K so 2700K is yellower by comparison. All things are relative. Don’t have to be living in front of poor colour balance screens to think 2700K warm white is yellowish light. Just getting outside and touching grass will do it. Tough luck if you are snowed in with all that blue landscape behind the curtains.
@TechConnectify there's a reason "Thou shalt not read the comments" is one of the ten commandments.
@TechConnectify @kwsapphire “
 if I let any of my personality leak out, people are mad.” I hope you realize and acknowledge that it also makes people (I’d argue, the majority of us) *very* happy. 😃
@TechConnectify @kwsapphire I enjoy your posts and come from an era where irony, sarcasm and goodwill are anticipated
@TechConnectify @kwsapphire Is there any actual hostility in the original post? I don’t see how any of this discussion is anything worth getting worked up about from either “side”

@TechConnectify @kwsapphire I think this is a large audience problem.

I read your posts in my internal rendition of your voice and cadence, and I've been subscribed long enough to your YouTube channel to know how you speak and how to interpret what you say.

But, let's be honest. One day I might be having a bit of an off day and completely misinterpret what you say wildly!

Maybe I will suck at making a good comment back, and thus make you upset as well.

If we assume that this can happen, then with more subscribers it will. That's not to discount people who are being intentionally cantankerous, or natural jerks.

I like you being here, I wish I had a solution.

@TechConnectify @kwsapphire I love all of your work, and your personality is what makes your videos special - otherwise it is AI reading Wikipedia. đŸ„°

Don’t let people who disagree with you ruin your day, especially with something subjective and/or vague (like color temps).

Block people who bother you. It’s not worth it (in the long run) to argue with people who disagree with you and are bored enough to keep discussing it - it will just wear you out.

Trust yourself â˜ș

@TechConnectify @kwsapphire ignore the haters they'll always hate you no matter what
@TechConnectify hey, I just wanted to let you know that not everybody is like that. There are a lot of people who appreciate what you do and actually "get it" without being offended.
@TechConnectify @kwsapphire be yourself. Block and mute aggressively.

@TechConnectify
I really don't understand why people are so hostile to you, it's not what I'm used to seeing on here.

Also: Firstly, I've heard 2700k described as "warm white" all my life, and secondly:
You don't have to cut someone out of your life because they disagree with the label we should put on a light temperature. Do people realise how ridiculous that is? Was the Twitter algorithm so good at building filter bubbles that even those dissenting opinions were filtered?
@kwsapphire

@TechConnectify I love your personality, keep doing what you do!
@TechConnectify I would personally also have trouble ignoring those jerks but be assured that there are more people who enjoy your rants, even if it hits a nerve from time to time.

@TechConnectify @kwsapphire

If you're constantly finding that people hate your personality, at least consider the possibility that you're taking an actual issue with yourself and folding it into your idea of personality. Of the people who have been major problems in my life, most of them have tried to pass their problems off as personality. And of the people who I've been able to get along with long term, none have.

I follow you here and on YouTube because you sometimes present interesting information -- not because I think you're pleasant person. I don't. Despite your bio, I view you as an extremely unfriendly person. I view you as someone who doesn't care one iota about the emotions of strangers.

I've been using Mastodon for a long time. I've been in various spaces on the platform. I've seen various people starting out. You are having a rather unique experience, and I see that experience as fully attributable to what you've chosen to consider part of your personality.

@TechConnectify @kwsapphire It may also be instructive to bring up the concept of punching up vs punching down. On your YouTube Channel, you tend to make fun of companies and industries. That is punching up. Here, you tend to make fun of ordinary people. Seeing as you have a major platform, that is very much punching down.

People tend to like seeing people punch up. It demonstrates bravery and worldliness. People tend to hate seeing people punch down. It demonstrates a lack of empathy. Refusing to draw a distinction between these two kinds of humor also demonstrates a lack of empathy.

And people especially hate punching down when they are the ones being punched.

@dipolecat It's pretty bold of you to make the assertions you're making, I must say.

For one - you think my experience is unique because of how I behave? Does that mean you don't think having my thoughts sent to 35 thousand people, some of whom are acquainted with violently anti-corporate people who are openly hostile to folks who host content on YouTube might be part of the issue?

Also - for the record, you're free to have these thoughts. Obviously. But expressing them at me? Pretty bold.

@dipolecat How do you think it feels to come onto a platform where people are telling me - to my face - that I shouldn't have my job, that I'm literally evil for using YouTube, or (as is the case right now) that "I view you as an extremely unfriendly person?"

Do you think that's a fun place to be and a fun place to spend time?

Because I don't. The only people I'm mad at are the jerks. But something about this platform causes me to run into them a lot.

But as usual, cause must be user error.

@TechConnectify @dipolecat Truth lies somewhere in the middle as always. People are over reacting. You're reacting too much. People will probably not lynch you as much if you stop giving them shit to lynch you for... Stop replying, start blocking or muting, it really isn't that big a deal. This shit will blow off, you've sort of hit the hornets nest by being overly hostile. Stop being overly hostile and after a while, the wasps will stop comming out.

Again, I believe people are being WAY too harsh on you, and I'm really sorry that is the case, but you can't and shouldn't turn a blind eye to the reason why you're being treated the way you are if you want them to stop... If not, that's fair, but then maybe it's not the platform's fault.
@cody @dipolecat Holy yikes man.
@TechConnectify @dipolecat Aigh, I mean... Just trying to be helpful and sincere...

I'll leave you alone if not interested

@cody @TechConnectify @dipolecat I mean,

Stop replying, start blocking or mutingWouldn't that be a game of whack-a-mole at his scale?
Regardless, he already said why that's not a solution -- one reason being that those trolls still clog his notifications.

@HedgiePT @TechConnectify @dipolecat Yes... but the trolls will not disappear if he keeps feeding them content... fighting back isn't a solution either... imo, wait 3 days, come back, nobody remembers what happened, problem solved.
It's not just blocking or muting, it's not feeding the beast.
@cody @HedgiePT gosh you so do not understand the problems of having 35 thousand followers on this platform
@TechConnectify @HedgiePT I clearly don't since I have 300, I don't disagree with you in that you may need to have some sort of content filter available to you, but defending your position by pissing off the entire platform is NOT the way man... that is all I'm trying to convey...

Regardless, not all is bad, I found you on here because of the drama, otherwise I probably wouldn't know you had a fedi account yet

@cody @HedgiePT Hey. For real now. Listen to me:

People do not believe me when I say I am encountering this shit. A lot of that is because of how federation works. So I am absofuckinglutley going to start boosting some of the toxic shit thrown my way because I'm tired of being gaslit.

And for the few that do believe that I'm having problems, telling me that I need to tone police myself or in other ways become a different person is PRETTY FUCKING GROSS.

@cody @HedgiePT
You are, in fact, exhibiting the behavior on this platform that is pushing me away.

Every time I express that I'm having difficulties here, it's assumed that I must have the problem and ya know what? I'm growing pretty weary of that.

@TechConnectify @HedgiePT I get that, but you need to understand you have millions of people who look up to you, that is a weapon. A weapon that can both be used for good, or straight up kill someone. You can drive a person to suicide by throwing those millions of people at a person.

And in the same way, you can ruin this platform. You may not like it, but we do, and we don't deserve to have it taken away from us just because you don't like it, the same way you don't deserve to be hated for not liking it. So again, you deserve to be treated with respect, but please treat others with respect, even if it isn't mutual... Take the high ground, you're the grown up who has a shitload of followers here, not us.

Either way, I'll heck off now, I'm sorry if I offend you in any way, but it is my sincere opinion here that everybody needs to chill here...

@cody @HedgiePT Literally all I am asking for is respect.

And if you don't know by now that I take the responsibility of my platform extremely seriously, I don't know why I bothered not taking sponsorships or hawking merch all this time.

@TechConnectify @HedgiePT Idk if I missinterpreted things, but you're threatening boosting people's replies so people go attack them... that's not very responsible. Thanks for everything else you did and do, and hopefully will continue doing that IS responsible.

 I'm sorry this is the way shit turned out man... I really wish everyone would be more tolerant...

@cody @HedgiePT You'd made an assumption there. I don't care what people do with the boosts (and I'll be boosting my reply, not the offending comment) and wouldn't wish for anyone to "go after" those folks.

But I am so. fucking. tired. of people not believing me when I say I'm not having a great time here. Lots of "why?" "everyone's nice to me" and "works on my machine"

If people don't believe the problem's there, it won't get fixed.

@cody @HedgiePT I am not going to just sit here and take it anymore.

And it is wild beyond wild that TWITTER of all places managed to be easier to exist in. I know that wasn't the case for everyone, but it absolutely was for me.

And I believe a big part of that was that there was actually a culture there and people faced repercussions *from the crowd* for being a jerk. Nobody does here, so there's a lotta jerks.

@TechConnectify @HedgiePT I'm sorry but maybe consider people being a jerk to you here may perfectly contradict what you just said.
People felt like you were a jerk, so you faced repercussions from the crowd. It just sucks to be in the receiving end of it and I don't wish that on anyone. That's why I am telling you to please not import that shit into here. We have enough of that.
@cody @TechConnectify I don't think it's as symmetric as you think.

The jerks from the crowd weren't forced to see his post. Nobody was tagged in it. Nobody had to engage.

On the contrary, when said jerks come to his mentions, well—
they come to his mentions. He is forced to see them. He has to see that negativity.

Sounds to me like it's easier for "the crowd" to unfollow, mute, block this one account, rather than the opposite.
@TechConnectify @HedgiePT Damn, I see, my bad then, I see it wasn't intentional... Would it work to just post "another one of those" or whatever you said you'd post (sorry, potato memory) without the boost? We'd still see the amount of times you get trolls in your notifications, without the potential catastrofic mental health implications of the boost...
@TechConnectify @HedgiePT Btw, try and mute words most often used by trolls, that may help (?
You CAN mute specific words.
Idk, just trying to help man... I sincerely do want you in this platform.
@TechConnectify @cody @dipolecat Yeah, this kinda stuff really shows how masto doesn't scale past a personal network

@TechConnectify for what it's worth, there's a lot of self appointed hallway monitors here and it sucks. I don't think it's the platform per se (no algorithm and all that), but rather the kind of people that have flocked here. Given the current continuing influx of a diverse crowd I hope it improves.

Some other high profile accounts (whom I shall not @) are vocal they just ignorw/block.

I hope you stay, I enjoy your content.

@cody @TechConnectify @dipolecat Uhm, yes, ignoring bad things has always made these things magically disappear in the past.

Because that's how everything works.

@Dozer @TechConnectify @dipolecat No, not really, not replying isn't ignoring the problem. The problem IS he is replying. Not replying (the way he is) WILL solve the problem.
@cody Are you able to empathize with another human being in a situation you know nothing about?

@cody @TechConnectify @dipolecat

I'm not sure it's helpful for people with ~250 followers to give advice to people with ~35,000 followers about how to cope with unpleasant interactions, because the challenges you're going to face are going to be completely different.

@cody @TechConnectify @dipolecat victim blaming much? People make decisions to be shitty to other people. That's not the fault of the other people.

@TechConnectify is upset about an issue that is clearly causing him real pain, and your response is to tell him to calm down. Tell me, does that ever work for you? How about *you* mute, block, or scroll if you don't like what he says? Or even unfollow.

Also you win jerk points for using 'lynch' in this scenario.

@anathema_device @TechConnectify @dipolecat I generally like what he says. I was just trying to be of help to him by giving him my opinion on the whole situation and attempting to de-escalate it, because I REALLY would prefer if people stopped being shitty to him.
If my opinion is not of help, I apologise for the pain I may have caused him or you or anyone else. Causing pain is really never my intention anywhere. Not even if I were being attacked.

@cody @TechConnectify @dipolecat Are you aware, that in this post, you are being a wasp?

It’s the “well intentioned” posts that are actually unwanted and missing the context and point that are the PITA. You’re being the PITA. Ya don’t need to say all the things you think - especially to people with massive audiences; that’s the crux of the issue. (I assume you are being bombarded with this. Guess what
 that’s a very small version of exactly the problem Alec has).

@cody @TechConnectify @dipolecat we need a special masto client which only shows replies with several favorites or retoots. (or is that already a feature?) And mastodon should introduce dislikes.
Then the end user can better filter.
@TechConnectify
@dipolecat
Agreed. This small but vocal group think any interaction and use of corporate services like YouTube is the end of the world. It isn't.....
