the "everyday" workhorse #pen i've grown fond of is the pilot G2 0.38 nib size. a couple of years ago i bought big pack of them, but i more recently decided that if i'm going to go through them regularly, i want to buy ink cartridge refills and not waste the pen bodies.

but the replacement cartidges keep failing in this weird way... (1/2)

(2/2)
first, the tip will start scratching the page, and bits of paper will get stuck in it. if i keep writing, it will start gushing ink and make a big mess.

what's going on here? can it be fixed? is it likely to be a defect just with this specific batch?

auxiliary question: can anyone recommend a fountain pen with a similar feel/style?

@chrisamaphone big fan of the sailor 1911 compass as a reasonably inexpensive but solid starter pen

I still write with mine all the time even though I have a number of "better" pens

$30 to $40 range
