the "everyday" workhorse #pen i've grown fond of is the pilot G2 0.38 nib size. a couple of years ago i bought big pack of them, but i more recently decided that if i'm going to go through them regularly, i want to buy ink cartridge refills and not waste the pen bodies.

but the replacement cartidges keep failing in this weird way... (1/2)

(2/2)
first, the tip will start scratching the page, and bits of paper will get stuck in it. if i keep writing, it will start gushing ink and make a big mess.

what's going on here? can it be fixed? is it likely to be a defect just with this specific batch?

auxiliary question: can anyone recommend a fountain pen with a similar feel/style?

#fountain_pens

@chrisamaphone I have not extensively used that pen, but I do love a fine, consistent line and I am in love with the Sailor Professional Gear Slim with an extra-fine nib. The barrel is probably a similar size, but without the rubber grip.

@chrisamaphone big fan of the sailor 1911 compass as a reasonably inexpensive but solid starter pen

I still write with mine all the time even though I have a number of "better" pens

$30 to $40 range

Sailor Compass 1911 Fountain Pen Review — The Pen Addict

The Pen Addict

@chrisamaphone a direct replacement for a Pilot G2, imho, is a Platinum Preppy 0.3mm

at under $5, i know of no better fountain pen - after trying many. the pilot v-pen is... not good.

@chrisamaphone there's a lot of counterfeit ink cartridges online, purporting to be official but absolutely not the same quality as the originals. i found this with fountain pens but absolutely expect it with other refills.
@lenary sigh, i did get them from amazon, so that may well be the case
