@amoshiashwili @aram It wasn't meant to be a gotcha, I went to schools & colleges with Jewish kids from the '50s through 1970 & never heard them or anyone else imply they weren't white.

If you were a person in 1955 who could pass as white wouldn't you? Is racial identity something you frequently talked about with your friends?

With all due respect, memories from schoolfriends fifty years ago may not be the best way to examine this issue.

@amoshiashwili @aram I'd say in high school & college we discussed race as much as any group of young people, especially after I transferred to the U. of Chicago. I can recall some of those discussions vividly, notably 1 where an Anthropology grad student explained that "Aryan" has no current scientific meaning outside of a linguistic group.
