Tesla getting owned by Swedish workers isn’t the story.

The story is that 90% of the Swedish workers belong to a union

And only around 11% of American workers belong to a union

The story is the message

What the Swedes have done by blocking delivery of Teslas will reverberate worldwide with workers showing the power of collective action.

@flexghost

and decentralized social media gives people the power to spread this information and organize, routing around corporations and billionaires. we're gonna look back on these days and the birth of this network as the spark of a worldwide revolution in the public interest.

@flexghost even if union membership was higher in the US, the Taft-Hartley makes solidarity strikes illegal. Because freedom or someshit.

@flexghost

So is this a strike? If they haven't declared a strike, but are refusing to work, why not declare a strike?

@LiveByReason @flexghost The mechanics are on strike for a few weeks now, but more sympathy-strikes are taking place soon.
Dock-workers are on strike, not unloading Tesla’s, postal workers, cleaning staff and construction-workers will join.The law requires a seven days notice.
@LiveByReason @flexghost it's not a strike, it's a blockade specifically on the unloading of tesla shipments. everything else is business-as-usual
@LiveByReason @flexghost it is a strike, plus other unions striking in solidarity.
@flexghost Well actually...
About 90% are cowered by a collective bargain contract, “only” about 70% are in the union.
@Pikettist @flexghost True, austerity economics hits workers hard.
@flexghost uh, where did you get the 90% figure from? only like 60% of blue-collar workers are members of a union (https://www.mi.se/nyheter/2023/fortsatt-hog-organisering-pa-arbetsmarknaden/)

@flexghost

From now on, if I must talk about Space-X, I'm going to refer to it as Rockkket, Inc.

@flexghost And, also, what is being done in Sweden and Norway is illegal in the USA under Taft-Hartley.
@flexghost Add Tesla models are rated near the bottom of their class for each model by Consumer Reports, JD Power, etc. Teslas have lost their uniqueness and buyer attraction. They look like a pile of dough waiting to be rolls or a bread loaf. The blank area for a grill is itching for decal of mouth with angry teeth and breathing fire. JMO.

Tesla was just ranked last by German TÜV (they certify anything from appliances to cars and power plants).

"For the first time, the Tesla Model 3 is also included, as there are now enough vehicles and therefore reliable figures available.

And the electric car pioneer promptly lands in last place […] The TÜV experts' complaints about the Tesla Model 3 were highest for lighting, brakes and axles."

@flexghost

I hope your forecast comes to pass.

@flexghost

But if I support unions how will I lord it over the peons when I inevitably ascend to billionairedom

@flexghost Elon must be foaming, having been brought to his knees by unionized workers!
@flexghost Proletarier der Welt vereinigt euch!
@flexghost 90% of workers are connected to a collective agreement which are negotiated by the unions, but unfortunately the overall union membership is about 70% and decreasing.

@flexghost

Sounds as if they may be woke

@flexghost sorry , but I dont think it will reverberate at all. This is not atypical of swedes, they know and will draw the line when the time comes. The enjoy an incredible social security net that they collectively agree to fight for, something we americans could never do. A honest portrayal is sweden is telling musk to take his crap to America, they don't want it. We don't have the fortitude to say no
@flexghost Hope they don't explode while these people continue to deny basic decent life standards to their workers.

@flexghost @dangoodin Being in a union is less of a big deal here in Sweden, unions mostly deal with worker security and a minimum raise for all workers, they do not set max salaries for someone who makes more money than the rest (which is a BS argument i've heard before). The fee paid by workers also offers training and other benefits that the employer does not provide, and if you get unemployed you get extra coverage on your unemployment benefit.

I see lots of Americans bitch and moan about unions, but honestly they don't know what they are talking about, and most Swedish companies see it as natural just to sign deals and move on to the next issue as it isn't a problem.

@flexghost Now and again an American company comes to Sweden and thinks they can run their stuff here like in America.

It didn't work for Coca Cola, it didn't work for Toys'r Us and it's not working for Tesla.
I remember when Toys tried to stop unionized workers; it was a blood bath: Not many people working in the stores of course, but also no deliveries, no food deliveries to the cafeterias, no trash collecting, no cleaning, no plowing or other winter treatment of parking lots...

@flexghost I recently returned to Sweden after twenty years working in tech in the UK.
The first thing I did after starting my new job in Sweden was to sign up for a union. It's nice to know there's someone on your side. I missed that in the UK.
@flexghost I cannot wait to see Twitter screenshots of Lord God Emperor Elon the Puerile offloading

@flexghost I'm curious what they do with China built Volvos, which are presumably non union.

Personally I'm looking to replace my Tesla with some non Musk EV, and Volvo is one option.

Sadly, saying that the unions are owning Tesla is very premature: there is uneven union membership in the shops themselves and Tesla is taking in scabs (which was basically taboo in Sweden) to the point that they have been able to keep things going so far.

In particular the dockworkers strike is mostly bypassed by Tesla having cars transported by truck from outside Sweden (via ferries or bridge) using foreign truckers.

You can get more details from the union newspaper at da.se (you'll have to translate from Swedish though)
