REI accused of widespread labor law violations at unionized US stores

REI, the camping and outdoor sports equipment retailer, was accused on Wednesday of dozens of violations of U.S. labor law at eight retail stores that have unionized since last year.

@stevenbodzin when my husband got laid off a few years ago he applied for an opening at REI, they offered him a job for $10/hour. I was shocked to learn how little they make there because everyone I've ever interacted with at REI is an outdoor gear expert. I hope wages have gone up since then.

@stevenbodzin

I guess you don't need to stay open on Black Friday if you're robbing your employees blind.

@stevenbodzin I love REI. I've spent a ridiculous amount of money at REI. I need to respect them to continue doing so. I hope they do the right thing.

@stevenbodzin (my comment on the petition site) I've been a (mostly proud) member of REI since 1981. I recognize the difference between a member-owned co-op and a worker-owned co-op. Since REI is the former, I stand with the people who work for REI and their right to form a union, and call on *OUR* co-op to voluntarily recognize the union.

Also, I want to say that I'm mildly irritated by the recent marketing "vibe" of the co-op, but maybe I'm just not seeing the need or am too old.
