The phenomenon you mention was discovered very early by Artemisia Gentileschi in 1610 when she painted her first famous painting "Susanna and the Elders"
This painting always felt so creepy. You can almost physically feel her discomfort.
I read this painting as having something to do with unpaid bills. But of course, someone else probably sees something else here, and that's as valid.
