Mansplaining was invented in the German countryside in 1874 when a gentleman realized how enthralling his commentary would be to a young woman on a train. Artist Berthold Woltze captured the scene so that men everywhere would become aware of the gentleman’s amazing discovery.
@LilahTovMoon “so libertarianism Is the idea that any government at all is bad…”
@LilahTovMoon I feel like there must be a new word for when men see a woman alone and feel it’s their right and obligation to invade her personal space and demand her attention and engagement. It’s like verbal man spreading

@seachanger

The phenomenon you mention was discovered very early by Artemisia Gentileschi in 1610 when she painted her first famous painting "Susanna and the Elders"

@mina @seachanger @LilahTovMoon missed opportunity to start off with "well, akshually..."
@seachanger @LilahTovMoon I remember coming across a video of a woman on the New York subway wearing headphones. A guy comes up to her and asks, “What are you listening to?” And she takes the headphones off and says, “Nothing, I just wear these so men won’t come up to me and start a conversation.” There’s an awkward pause, then she puts her headphones back on and goes about her day.
@seachanger @LilahTovMoon I think "EWW" is always sufficient.
@LilahTovMoon her facial expression ... just perfect
@LilahTovMoon She even has a smartphone. :)
@LilahTovMoon uugghhhhhhh thanks for the reminder of this painting - it's both amazing and awful - SHE'S IN MOURNING YOU DICKWAD
@sarajw @LilahTovMoon …holy crap, that’s a new low for mansplaining.😳
@dorzig @LilahTovMoon I would argue it's more harassment than mansplaining (after all we have no idea what he's saying).
@sarajw @LilahTovMoon I like this video by artdeco where she talks about the painting and mentions hatpins. Which got very long and sharp. https://yewtu.be/watch?v=gmUeNnuFrl4
@LilahTovMoon I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.

@LilahTovMoon

This painting always felt so creepy. You can almost physically feel her discomfort.

@LilahTovMoon I am imagining how long he droned on, for the painter to have time to capture this. While the young lady is pleading w the painter to do something. Or the viewer. Anyone?!
@LilahTovMoon Another invention the woman doesn't get credit for.
@LilahTovMoon
At the Royal Ontario Museum, my favorite section I think is a whole circle of male busts looking very important, and this bust, the only one of a woman looking at them all.
#eyeroll #sculpture
@LilahTovMoon @lisamelton I would love a reproduction carpetbag. I’d use it for overnight travel.
@LilahTovMoon that totally captures the look on my face when someone mansplains to me 😆
@LilahTovMoon she's literally like "fuock, let me scroll my insta in peace"
@LilahTovMoon Funny, I wrote about Woltze sine days ago. about this picture

@dr_jo_mue @LilahTovMoon

I read this painting as having something to do with unpaid bills. But of course, someone else probably sees something else here, and that's as valid.

@iju @LilahTovMoon I think that her husband has been killed in action. And her daughter doesn't understand.

@dr_jo_mue @LilahTovMoon

Well, that's even worse. Thank you for explaining.

@dr_jo_mue @LilahTovMoon
childsplaining
@magmaus3 @LilahTovMoon maybe. I guess her husband/the child's father was killed in action/won't come back.

@LilahTovMoon

This was the first time I saw this on a screen larger than six inches, and by jove, she's actually crying for having to have this conversation.

@LilahTovMoon
poor person is crying from boredom / rage.
@LilahTovMoon oye vey he's probably telling her to smile too
@LilahTovMoon
Zooming in on the pic. The guy is creepy as.
@LilahTovMoon Guilty as charged, at least occasionally.

@LilahTovMoon best caption ive ever seen for a painting. 😂

What i mean by caption is... 😛

@LilahTovMoon @aerique “Wait til the other Kens find out about Mansplaining”
@LilahTovMoon Actually, it's only mansplaining, when it comes from the Mannspleinersteig region in Thuringia!
@LilahTovMoon to be honest I think mostly the girl's face has something heartbreaking as ... is she crying? She is on a train, an old creep approaches and obviously nobody helps ...
It's quite scary to see this kind of situation somehow also existed back then. I am totally serious about that as ... look into her eyes. She is scared. She asks for help.
@LilahTovMoon what hurts me the most about this portrait is that not only that man is clearly harassing her, he's doing so while seeing her in a clearly distressed state while wearing a mourning attire.
@LilahTovMoon ACTUALLY that's... (proceeds to mansplain)
Nah joking, this was pretty funny.
@LilahTovMoon ah bullshit. mansplaining was invented before, but this is the first time an artist really captured the experience
@LilahTovMoon 150th anniversary coming up, in case anyone hadn’t noticed.
@LilahTovMoon
У#€бан - понятие вневременное.
Были, есть и, к сожалению, будут.
@LilahTovMoon did you just womansplain mansplaining
@LilahTovMoon thank you for explaining this at me
