Step 1: Get every nerd and weirdo in the world onto a Framework Laptop.

Step 2: Get everyone else.

@frameworkcomputer cheap laptops when
@mks_h @frameworkcomputer that comes with "get everyone else"
once a machine gets popular enough for mainstream appeal, it's no longer an expensive nerd project, they can subsidize and make it cheaper while keeping the quality the same, and optimize processes more at scale.
@Jessica @frameworkcomputer I agree, but I'm talking more about laptops with low specs. Although they would probably come in the second stage as well.

@mks_h @Jessica @frameworkcomputer

Lowering the laptop specs wouldn't make it almost any cheaper without first having a massive scale. Most of the money from your framework purchase goes towards the things like R&D, excellent support, shipping, etc. Only when the company gets to the point where all of these things come basically free per unit can you make a budget laptop that makes sense. Although Frameworks have a great value second-hand if you are looking for a cheaper option.

@gloopsies @mks_h @frameworkcomputer for the specs, framework laptops are actually insanely well priced. last time I checked you're paying $100 over spec market value and you're getting a well built repairable laptop.
@gloopsies @mks_h @frameworkcomputer not to mention the money you'd save over time by not replacing the whole laptop, only the mobo and parts as they wear/break.

@Jessica @frameworkcomputer @mks_h

I've pre-ordered my AMD framework as soon as I've seen the AMD version release news. I finally get to use it tomorrow and I can't wait

@gloopsies @frameworkcomputer @mks_h well it's nice to know that you're not stuck with a slow old laptop when the next mainboard comes out, just take the old one out and stick a new one in!

@Jessica @frameworkcomputer @mks_h

I don't plan on replacing this board for years, it has insane performance and I don't think I'll need upgrading for a while. Getting to replace the battery or adding touch screen if that ever becomes an option tho is very appealing

@gloopsies @frameworkcomputer @mks_h yea You'll most likely be set for years.
my friend gave me his old macbook air m1, but if I were to buy a laptop on my own it would be a framework, even though it's very pricey I'd be willing to save

@Jessica @frameworkcomputer @mks_h

It's really reasonably priced for the hardware, it just doesn't have any cheaper options currently unfortunately

@gloopsies @frameworkcomputer @mks_h well I'd still consider it an investment because after that upgrades are fairly cheap
@mks_h @frameworkcomputer oh yea not to mention most laptop OEMs subsidize their laptops with bloatware!
framework doesn't do that
@mks_h @frameworkcomputer if we take away the bloatware sponsor price, it'd probably be pretty similar if not the same price
@Jessica @frameworkcomputer not really. You can usually buy the same laptops cheaper with FreeDOS (aka without Windows and anything they put on it)
@mks_h @frameworkcomputer the business sector doesn't load their laptops with bloat anyways. also cheaper because windows liscenses cost money

@Jessica @frameworkcomputer @mks_h Remember the Lenovo scandal? For a while, every Windows they supplied came with bloatware with a dodgy certificate which broke privacy badly.

I had one and it was faster and data usage was a lot less after I installed vanilla Windows.

@frameworkcomputer
I don't need a New Laptop right now. But the next will be a FrameWork.
@danielkassner @frameworkcomputer This is the problem. People who want a framework are the people who don’t throw away perfectly good computers just because a newer model exists.
@josephholsten @danielkassner @frameworkcomputer sure, but once they change to a framework laptop...

@frameworkcomputer hoping you will ship to Indonesia, someday.

Take your time because my current laptop is still good ^^

@frameworkcomputer Still waiting for you to start shipping to my country
@frameworkcomputer I'm not sure whether to be insulted or happy
@frameworkcomputer Unfortunately economically impossible rn, maybe in the future:D

@frameworkcomputer This nerd needs mouse buttons as a hard requiement.

And then, Coreboot without ME/TrustZone blobs.

@frameworkcomputer I think you’re forgetting “and their family & friends” on that - otherwise pretty solid - plan.

@frameworkcomputer

Step 3: Bring Framework to India.

@frameworkcomputer would love to see it!

Fwiw aspect ratio is my main holdup. I'll be able to consider it much more seriously once 16:9 or 16:10 is on the way, but I understand that will likely be a while

@fogoplayer @frameworkcomputer the 16” is 16:10
@PCurd @frameworkcomputer I didn't know that! That's bigger than I'm used to, but could be worth it for all the other benefits
@fogoplayer @frameworkcomputer out of curiosity, why? My experience has always been, at least with work/computer-related hobbies I do (generally sysadmin/programming related, with occasional 3d modelling), that taller screens are better, and for content consumption/games, larger displays are better.
@ar @frameworkcomputer i seem to be in the minority, but I generally find myself needing horizontal screen real estate more than vertical. I can see more browser tabs, I can put windows side-by-side, I can leave sidebars open, etc

@fogoplayer @frameworkcomputer it was for me too, but after using it for a while honestly I love it. These days 16:9 feels like I'm trying to watch a widescreen movie of my computer.

Then again I grew up with 4:3 so maybe I'm an outlier these days.

@frameworkcomputer You're going to need a pretty big laptop, or a shrink ray
@frameworkcomputer Just a quick reminder that there are nerds and weirdos in Czechia too. When will you finally start shipping to the entirety of EU?
@Razemix @frameworkcomputer At least it's possible to use freight forwarding company for delivery to unsupported EU country now 🙂 https://knowledgebase.frame.work/en_us/eu-unsupported-SJByUb7a
Purchasing products in a European Economic Area (EEA) country that Framework does not ship to

You can purchase from any EU country, but you are responsible for logistics and shipping costs if it is not an EU country that Framework supports shipping to.

@frameworkcomputer Is there a way to fix the sloppy lid of the previous generation of Framework 13 laptops?

@frameworkcomputer

If you ever make a phone, I want one. I've had to pay to replace my third spicy pillow battery over the course of two phones last month. Being able to get replacement parts and service it on my own would have made things much easier and safer.

@Tathar @frameworkcomputer Have you come across Fairphone? www.fairphone.com

They have a modular smartphone and sell spare parts for it :)

@Tathar @frameworkcomputer Fairphone is excellent tbh, my FP3 has served me well for years and hasn't failed me yet. Parts are ez to source too!
@frameworkcomputer If you start shipping in other regions, Step 1 is almost done ;)
@frameworkcomputer I would buy one of these (AMD GPU model, 16", I think?) if it came with an OLED display.
@frameworkcomputer nerd here who still can't purchase framework due to geographical restrictions!
@frameworkcomputer your laptop will be top of the list when I look for a new one.
@frameworkcomputer your laptop will be top of the list when I look for a new one.
@frameworkcomputer get your freaking parts easier to buy around the globe first
@frameworkcomputer you need to be able to sell them in countries (like New Zealand) where said nerds exist.
@[email protected] If someone makes a PowerPC (or hell, even ARM) board for your 13" chassis, then I'll consider it.
@frameworkcomputer mediatek WiFi in AMD laptops tell your Linux users a different story...
