Netflix and chill, more like Plex server and hold on a sec I just need to fix this, gimme a second
Anyway I’m finally watching Perfect Blue but the subtitles aren’t appearing, so I guess I’m watching this by myself
Which in turn I’m watching because I want to play IMMORTALITY, and the blurb shows some serious Satoshi Kon vibes https://store.steampowered.com/app/1350200/IMMORTALITY/
Steamで40% OFF:IMMORTALITY

マリッサ・マルセルは、3本の映画に出演した映画スターであった。しかし、どの映画も公開されなかった。そして、彼女は姿を消した。「Her Story」のクリエイター、サム・バーロウの新作ゲーム。

@so such a good game. I’d also say “Only Lovers Left Alive” is a good mood setter for it.
@megahbite I enjoyed Her Story so as long as it’s at least that good I’ll have a good time I’m sure. Of course, if it actually does contain references or similarities to Satoshi Kon works I’ll be even happier

@so Watched that maybe 20 years ago. I'm not sure I really "got it" back then, but I may also have had a cut edit of it.

Interested to hear what you think of it.

@DrCuriosity man, it was… unsettling. One of my greatest fears is psychotic episodes and being unable to tell reality, so it was really effective there. Perfect Blue is to Black Swan what Paprika is to Inception. The colourful, much more fucked up and darker version.
@DrCuriosity it’s really rewarding to close watch because there’s so much interlocking symbolism around glass and mirrors and doubles and so on. Kinda reminds me of Single White Female there too
@DrCuriosity watching it 25 years in the future, it’s actually pretty prescient around use of the internet for harassment and catfishing, given it predates the term catfishing by more than 10 years. None of the internet related stuff seems outright ridiculous watching it now, which is pretty neat
@DrCuriosity the plot is kind of a hot mess at times, but I love play within a play metatextual stuff so I gotta forgive it for that, plus I think the tightness of the visual symbolism compensates for it. I like the movie within a movie stuff also because it’s a precursor to Millennium Actress and to a lesser extent Paprika.
@DrCuriosity I do think the idol culture part is dated. If anything things are more fucked up now, since the movie predates the existence of AKB48. The 90s was also a period where pop groups represented by Johnny & Associates agency were really big, but sexual abuse allegations from that period are only finally being brought to light this year
@DrCuriosity one neat thing that’s i suspect is lost in translation: early in the movie Mima codeswitches when talking to her mother on the phone and speaks with a strong regional accent, which is another sign of the whole multiple identities thing
@DrCuriosity it doesn’t dethrone my favourite Satoshi Kon movie Millennium Actress, but I think I’d put it above Paprika because Paprika is all over the place visually in comparison

@so Appreciate your reflections, thank you :-)

I might have to give Paprika a watch soon - I honestly can't remember if I've seen that before or not.

@so All my decisions around home automation and entertainment are an attempt to avoid exactly that. I'm doing... reasonably well. :)
@thomasbeagle yeah I feel like it’s still at the bad end of the xkcd table
@so I’m very pleased how the *arr web apps make this all so easy to manage now but then you get silly things like the 3rd party metadata database breaking making them completely non-functional.

@megahbite @so the downloads work very well! It’s the watching that fails 😆

Somewhat ironically when I watch on my iPad I have trouble getting the subtitles to turn _off_.

@so netflix and chill, more like jellyfin whoops it crashed again
@halva I've never had Jellyfin crash, but I did come to the comments to add a *Jellyfin
@so I have never feel so targeted in this place
@so I don't generally have problems with playing video in Plex.

I just have problems where I input poorly tagged MP3s and Plex thinks every single song is written by Fast Food Rockers
@so Plex and I swear I added that movie, hang on let me check. Nope, sorry hang on while I rip it and get it on the server. Just be five minutes, tops
@so I'm in this post and I don't like it

@so
In one way or another this has been me for various media delivery mechanisms for over 15 years.

You've seen me...

@so not me learning about remote subtitle fetching while The VVitch is on the big screen and everyone is waiting patiently
@so Same thing here, but it's just the default DLNA built into Windows Media Player (the old version) 😆 👍
@so me but with Emby 🫣
@so @silvereagle I feel personally called out by this post.
@so Just Put.io. When the subtitles are broken I fire it up with VLC and fiddle a bit with the delays.
@so where were you hiding in my living room last night?
@so remember me and friend of course had to patch for heartbleed to able to watch in peace
@so Kodi and hang on our USB drive isn't mounted
@so In all seriousness TrueNAS SCALE on a NAS and Jellyfin doesn't have too many headaches
@so haha! This actually was me the other night, we sat down to watch a film and something was going on.. hang on, just need to reboot the server, router and switch!
@so I should probably learn to set up my own Plex...
@so Plex server and "How the hell did you claim control of the GPU, that's supposed to be for transcoding!"
@so jellyfin and fuck it it’s not working let’s just have sex

@ginny @so this happens all the time for sure

Torrents and “just wait a second I'm sure the seeds will go online bro”

@so actually Jellyfin is the way to go...

And if that doesn't work it's one of the many illegal streaming sites I love using!

And if push really comes to shove... the ol' HDD with terabytes of movies never disappoints.

@so "I'm in this and I don't like it"
@so Given all the complaints I see about Plex, I think I must live a charmed life. It has worked well for me (for about a year)
@so 🤣 budget a 20-30 min buffer of "hold on let me fix this"... just like the ads at the movie theater
Perfect time for the other person to get some popcorn!
@so i feel personally attacked
@so new hiring campaign: "work at Netflix, we'll pay you loads of money to maintain Plex servers for millions of people"
@so True! One of the reasons I ditched it.
@so jellyfin and "yeah this says 4k but I think I borked the NVENC setup so it looks like shit oh hold on maybe it's just the torrent but at least look we got tonemapping working, now it's not as washed out as yesterday huh??"

@so was watching some unsolved mysteries on jellyfin last night & somehow the metadata is wrong- they're all off by one episode

Then swiftfin crashed after I hit back instead of the volume button & wouldn't play the episode again
