@nixCraft where is this quote from?
@0x9060 pretty much every liberal and conservative. can't raise benefits for the unemployed too much or let alone oh dear introduce universal basic income since no one would work then no more. At least in the US and western Europe that's the usual bullshit against social benefits for those in need.

@nixCraft for Minecraft, I'd mention the Uncensored Library

https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/uncensored-library

@standingpad @nixCraft you know this got me thinking Minecraft is closer to the what the metaverse was expected to be then fb/meta's crappy implementation.
@nixCraft let's not forget teachers. Teachers in STEM, especially at the college level, would roughly double their salaries going into industry.
@adamhotep @nixCraft more than double... I have a math prof (just using him because I directly know how much he makes, but CS is paid the same) at my uni, teaches 3 classes/semester, gets paid like $27k/year... at CSU Fullerton nonetheless (sky-high housing prices...)

@nixCraft Profit for wikipedia authors is in form of correcting others and pushing their agenda, on admin level there is massive mismanagement which makes the yearly donation call mandatory.

Minecraft rewards players with fun during gaming.

Open source coders get their passion satisfied.

Firefighters satisfy their fetish for doing "good" or compensate for their bad.

True altruism is a myth.

Have a good day and always think positive 😜

@Pentropy @nixCraft Open source contributions also grow their public portfolio so getting a job might be easier.
@oherrala @Pentropy @nixCraft I don't think I've ever heard anyone doing serious open source who wanted to work "for the exposure" or "for a portfolio".

@oherrala which also counts for minecraft, at least the CPU @nazokiyoubinbou mentioned in their comment. The first dude who did so got a job at intel.

Basically redstone is a cellular automaton like Conways Game of Life in which you find many CPUs, chips and whole computer systems implemented. People even built Game of Life in Game of Life 😂

@Pentropy
Of course true Altruism is a myth, doesn't change the outcome tho... (Am I supposed to put a smug emoji here as well?)

@nixCraft @Pentropy yes, but that’s exactly the point! you don’t need profit to get people motivated. getting to feel good for various reasons (or solving a problem for yourself and sharing that solution with others etc.) can cause a lot of important work to get done, without ever needing the exchange of money or any form of bartering or similar.

it doesn’t matter if it’s altruistic or not, what matters is that the work gets done

@LambdaDuck well, altruism is the extension of "no profit". back to subject "no profit": there is profit, just not explicitly in financial form. there is bartering. no dev will all their time with writing an OS when a website tickles the same fancy. and what gets done? ever seen OSS? there are 3 showcases and the rest of the software has never heard of usability. where is the FOSS DAW? where is the FOSS after effects? where is the FOSS CAD? things do *not* get done. personal urges get satisfied.

@Pentropy that’s just not true. why make a website when making an OS is more interesting. ever seen linux? gimp? inkscape? musescore? etc. etc.

people do care about helping others and the joy from doing good is indistinguishable from altruism for any practical purposes

@nixCraft To be fair, squirting water on fires is pretty fun... Cutting down trees from someone's roof in a storm on the other hand... actually that's also pretty fun. 🦺
@nixCraft minecraft players receive revenue through youtube videos
@nixCraft add 'activists' to the list
