@nixCraft for Minecraft, I'd mention the Uncensored Library
@nixCraft Profit for wikipedia authors is in form of correcting others and pushing their agenda, on admin level there is massive mismanagement which makes the yearly donation call mandatory.
Minecraft rewards players with fun during gaming.
Open source coders get their passion satisfied.
Firefighters satisfy their fetish for doing "good" or compensate for their bad.
True altruism is a myth.
Have a good day and always think positive 😜
@oherrala which also counts for minecraft, at least the CPU @nazokiyoubinbou mentioned in their comment. The first dude who did so got a job at intel.
Basically redstone is a cellular automaton like Conways Game of Life in which you find many CPUs, chips and whole computer systems implemented. People even built Game of Life in Game of Life 😂
@nixCraft @Pentropy yes, but that’s exactly the point! you don’t need profit to get people motivated. getting to feel good for various reasons (or solving a problem for yourself and sharing that solution with others etc.) can cause a lot of important work to get done, without ever needing the exchange of money or any form of bartering or similar.
it doesn’t matter if it’s altruistic or not, what matters is that the work gets done
@Pentropy that’s just not true. why make a website when making an OS is more interesting. ever seen linux? gimp? inkscape? musescore? etc. etc.
people do care about helping others and the joy from doing good is indistinguishable from altruism for any practical purposes
