Tonight I participated in the first of three rounds of the COIN Discord Server's Vijayanagara: a Tournament for the Deccan! I'm playing as the Sultanate of Delhi, which means I get to spend my games fending off both the Mongol invasion in the north and rebellion from the Vijayanagara Empire and the Bahmani Kingdom in the south.

This was my first time:

  • Playing a COIN game with human opponents
  • Playing this particular game

Unsurprisingly, I lost! It was a six point spread: me with 8, the Bahmani Kingdom with 13, and Vijayanagara with 14. Also unsurprisingly, the player who won was the same person who won last year's tournament.

Other folks on the server pointed out the weakness in my play and, yeah, they're right. I got some really excellent advice for how to improve my game for the next round of the tournament that I'm excited to put into practice. I'm also pretty proud that I managed to fend off total annihilation, and didn't score the lowest of all the Sultanate players in the tournament. In all, a fun game and a good learning experience.

Tonight I played in the second week of the Vijayanagara tournament. Once again, I came in last, but it was extremely close - 6, 7, and 9 points. If I had managed to reclaim a single two-point province from the Vijayanagara Empire, I would have won. It was great chatting with the other players after as well, since numerous small changes in our plays would have radically altered the outcome of the game. I enjoyed this a lot more than last time, and it played in only an hour and a half too!

Today was my final game in the COIN Discord Vijayanagara tournament. I managed to score 2nd place by a single point - my first non-last finish and probably the best I've played so far. As usual, I didn't end up passing for resources, but instead relying on LimOps to clean up areas as the opportunities presented the self. Was this the right play? Probably not - there were two rounds near the end where I didn't have the resources I needed to do what I wanted. Similarly, I kept making the mistake of placing governors in spaces where the Bahmani Kingdom could convert them to Amirs. This was dumb.

Either way, another excellent game that makes me excited for the physical version to ship from GMT Games.
