A ★★★½ review of Sānsūr

Part of HRFFB 2023 (Human Rights Film Festival Berlin). [English] On Hormuz Island, richly decorated masks are traditionally made and worn by women. They are used for veiling for religious reasons, but interestingly also for seduction. Several Iranian women have their say in the film, talking about their lives in the repressive system and conservative society in Iran. They are teachers and actresses, or come from sports and music. The mask is symbolically passed on from woman to woman. For women in Iran, it also serves to protect their identity. Harassment and even imprisonment are the consequences if they are
