The rest of #LostAndLonesome25thBirthday was great too. The Icypoles were exceedingly twee, but in a way completely devoid of indiepop tropes: no jangly strings or glockenspiels but instead multi-part harmonies and polyrhythms. The Smallgoods duo started as A Smallgood, due to Lachlan having caught the rona; Gus played the first four songs solo and pulled it off with great aplomb, and was joined by sometime Smallgood Janita Foley for the last two.
The final band was Mid-State Orange. They played mostly new songs (they apparently have a whole album recorded), though finished with their big hit of 2003, Summer In Disguise. As they barrelled through the second verse, three members of The Smallgoods and The Icypoles strutted down the stairs at the back of the stage carrying two trombones and a trumpet, taking positions at microphones waiting on the end of the stage: The Rhinestone Horns, who played on the original, were back to bring the house down in style. That entire song made me extra glad that I flew from Sweden to Naarm to see the show, as had I missed it, I would have rued it for a long time.
