My hat goes off to those Swedish dockworkers refusing to unload Teslas until they negotiate with their local employees.

Incredible solidarity.

Swedish Ports Threaten to Block Teslas From Entering the Country

Tesla is failing to play by Swedish labor rules, unions claim. Now a strike that started with mechanics is beginning to spread.

As far as I understand things from a very brief look… it appears Tesla essentially hires whole car carriers for its shipments.

Those massive ships sitting in port, crewed, powered, and not yet unloaded are going to get incredibly expensive fast.

It’d be hard to put the liability on the shipper here. It’s all Tesla.

They could take them across the Oresund to Denmark, I guess, and drive them over, but that’s not free either, or guaranteed to be free of labour disruption.

Worth keeping in mind that Tesla’s effective margin (RoA) is only 8.03%.

Anything that increases the delivery cost beyond that turns a sale into a loss.

Apparently a container ship costs something like a quarter million dollars per day to operate, a little over half of that being fuel.

The average car carrier holds 3000 or so cars.

Even halving the daily operating cost (to account for reduced fuel usage) leaves 416.66$ a day per car in costs.

At a 43k base price that means they’re losing money on each car sold after 8 days and change. Clocks running.

(And that’s assuming they avoid further discounts)

@taco Stevedore would make a good superhero name. I'll phone Marvel first thing on Monday.
@psneeze as long as they swear like a… well… stevedore.

@taco

As I understand the Swedish system, this is how they can negotiate flexible contracts on case-by-case basis on workplaces: if the owners refuse to come to the table, the whole business will suddenly turn unviable, which somehow doesn't affect their competitors.

Repost of above post requesting the above post be boosted. But including the post. As if this were another demonstration of why people who want to communicate not harrass need quote posts.

@taco "Hello Tesla, and welcome to Sweden. I see you've met our unions. What, you thought companies gave us things like 5 weeks minimum payed holiday, protection of employment etc out of the goodness of their hearts?"
@taco Awesome. One of the many things I like about living here.
