β€œThere was nothing ever like it on television." β€” Rita Moreno

THE ELECTRIC COMPANY debuted on PBS on this day in 1971.

(1) The Electric Company logo, with the words in neon-styled capital letters on a burst of orange and black clouds.

(2) Rita Moreno (left) with arms raised in a pumped-up pose, and Morgan Freeman holding up a decorated cue card that reads "Hey you guys!". Both are dressed in squad caps and bowties as if they're delivering a singing(?) telegram.

@LinuxAndYarn @willmckinley absolutely loved this show! Ah the memories πŸ’•
@willmckinley was a big fan - can hear the theme song just seeing those images.

It's amazing how deeply the psychedelic era effected literally everything.

@clintruin oh wow. i haven't seen those characters or heard that song in close to 4, working on 5 decades. thanks for finding it πŸ’–

It's a little strange right? I'd forgotten how psychedelic it was, and my memory had re-jigged some shit, but yeah...nostalgia for eras barely recalled.
@clintruin yeah, we had a wild childhood alright πŸ˜‚
mahna mah na

@clintruin

Ah, you even linked to the "right" version of the intro. πŸ˜› Man, the nostalgia just came crashing down hard...

@willmckinley

In 1971, I was nine years old. Sesame Street was for "little kids" and then this hit. Perfect timing for me.

@willmckinley
My dad and I liked to watch this together--for pure entertainment because we both knew how to read πŸ˜‰
@willmckinley For years as a child, I worried about being able to tell a cabbage from a lettuce because of Morgan Freeman on this show!
@willmckinley
many years later (and still many years ago) a boss I worked for had what was claimed to be one of the original two video effects generators used to create the EC intro. Neat example of analog computing and video tricks, with nothing we'd really consider a processor anywhere to be seen. (He was a collector.)
I tended to hide behind metal bookshelves full of books whenever he turned it on. The mini CRTs on the front looked spicy, in a soft x-ray kinda way..

Fargo North, Decoder!

(Everytime I hear anyone say β€œFargo”, that silly pun flashes through my head.)

@rickgoldstein

Thanks for reminding me of that! When I was a kid, that pun went right over my head, but now I'm groaning so hard. I wonder how that registers on the rictus scale?

@willmckinley Oh my God I love that show. And I was an adult when it premiered. How about Tom lLehrer's stuff on that show?!
