I cannot understate how important profile images are for me.

I do not know you by your name, I know you by your image. Yes, even though your name is also always right there next to your image.

And if I knew you in real life, I would know you by your face and forget your name embarrassingly often because my brain prunes those neuron connections CONSTANTLY.

I have prosopagnosia (face blindness–I only used the medical term to see if I can remember how it is spelled. Got it right!)
I cannot recognize those with avatars that are photographs.
But I easily can tell those who use drawings or caricatures, like you do. Which I find a bit surprising.
Unfortunately, in real life I not only cannot recognize people, but I also don't remember names.

@jetton @dyani Interesting - fellow prosopper here (diagnosis: functional but impaired) I know what you mean about forgetting names, I always feel that once there's a 'hook' to hang info on - which for most people is faces - it's easy to retain the rest, but without the ability to recall faces we're also lacking the hook to attach everything else to. I don't just forget the face, so much else goes too.
