A preview of tonight's Burd's #31NightsOfHorror mini themed double feature, "Going Deutsch?".*

And yes, the first film is technically Austrian and the second film's production history has some yikes:

Angst (1983) & Der Fan (1982)

*points to those who caught this throwaway Psych reference.

The emotion I most felt in highschool.

First time watching:

Angst (1983)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Off the bat, I'm not sure I can decide what is more unsettling:

The content of the narration or the very present sound design.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

So I stumbled onto this earlier this year renting a DVD of it from the unusual record and curiosities shop I've come to occasionally haunt.

I sought out a copy for myself after viewing it because, well I'm not exactly sure. This film got in my head. Incredibly problematic art.

Now watching:

Der Fan (1982)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

The more I think about it during this rewatch, the more I'm sure this would make a really good double feature with Burning (2018).

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

We're gonna keep "Going Deutsch?" with a BOO-nus 👻 Watch.

Why the hell not, let's see what The German Chainsaw Massacre (1990) has in store for us. Or...Blackest Heart. What a terrible alternate title.

Also, apparently Udo Kier is in this because...of course he is.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Oh the places we'll go.

Udo Kier is certainly...unforgettable in this.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Tonight's Burd's #31NightsOfHorror pick is one of those films that I just never quite got around to watching before but I have listened to many a podcast recap and review. This has resulted in me having a very specific idea in my head of this film but I acknowledge it is a pretty glaring blindspot.

It's going to feel really good to finally check it off the list later tonight.

I understand why a lot of modern movies withhold their title card until the end. But, damnit, I love even the most basic opening title because I too am basic.

Now watching for the first time (apologizes Mr. Raimi):

Drag Me to Hell (2009)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Uhhhh, yeah. Like I wasn't immediately gonna put this on right after Drag Me to Hell as a BOO-nus 👻 Watch.

It's The Evil Dead, baby!

The Evil Dead (1981)
Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

I went to look at my original review of The Evil Dead as I was getting ready to start it up. And you know what? It is a really satisfying feeling to read a piece of writing from a few years ago that I still 100% stand by.

Like, if I had to write it again today, I wouldn't change a got dang thing.

It's not terribly profound but I certainly am terribly proud of it.

A review of The Evil Dead (1981)

Love | Like | Indifferent | Dislike Love a cabin in the woods. Watching a 4k of a 16mm film is weirdly cool. I've said in the past, this movie scared the shit out of me as a kid. I turned it off at the porch swing shot my first time watching because it creeped me out so bad, but that shot is burned into my head. The cinematography and editing works so damn well so a low budget production. Cut down, balls to the wall horror, but seriously the tree doesn't age well. Shout out to perfect Cheryl, fifth

Just when you think I'm gonna zig on you? That's right when I'm gonna zag. Of course we are doing another BOO-nus 👻 Watch but...

It's The Japanese Evil Dead, baby!

Bloody Muscle Bodybuilder In Hell (1995)
Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Due to mental stability reasons, I probably only have one watch in me today. But it IS a first time watch.

Now watching:

Basket Case (1982)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

You want to know how absolutely fucking spaced I am?

I didn't even realize the terrible joke I make about me not feeling all too well in the head right now while watching a movie LITTERALLY called Basket Case.

I'm like a nun in an airplane needing to be talked down.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Tonight is Night One of Fright in the Brites. Setting up a projector in the brewery after work tonight and screening a seriously under appreciated tale regarding the revenge of one, Jimmy Bones.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Fright in the Brites!
BEER!
BONES!
Burd's #31NightsOfHorror!

Bones (2001)

Let's make it a Katharine Isabelle (swoon) double feature with a BOO-nus 👻 Watch.

First time:

American Mary (2012)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

The micro theme tonight for Burd's #31NightsOfHorror is 'The Mis-Shaped'.

I still haven't watched a chunk of the later Halloween films so I'm starting to rectify by watching The Shapes that I've...missed.

That means Curse, H20, & Resurrection are all getting slashed off the list later tonight. 🔪

Up first for "The Mis-Shaped":

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Time for a little water break otherwise known as the next movie for "The Mis-Shaped':

Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

So I've come to the conclusion that killing is not Michael Myers only hobby.

Dude fucking *lives* to drive.

He got behind the wheel in that first film and he's been hooked ever since. We have to assume that since no one taught him, that his driving skill is also inherently a manifestation of his evil.

All of this to say:
GIVE MICHAEL MYERS A ROAD MOVIE, YOU COWARDS!

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Based on what I know about this movie, people's opinions of it, and knowledge of my own terrible taste, there is a not insignificant chance I'm gonna fall really hard for this.

It's Part III of "The Mis-Shaped" and Part "who the hell is still counting?" of The Halloween Franchise:

Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Yeah.....

My terrible taste prevails again!

A review of Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

Love | Like | Indifferent | Dislike None of this makes any sense! Don't think too hard about it. I know what you're thinking, "do they mean none of the movie makes any sense or is none of the review going to make any sense?". And the answer is "Yes!" and don't think too hard about it. True credit to Jamie Lee Curtis for how many times she has been willing to come back to this franchise. I'll say I dont hate the look of Michael's mask in this one. No. No. Mickey Stern's party is tonight and you know

Night 7 of Burd's #31NightsOfHorror!

I'm on a road to watching one of my all time favorite horror actors in a role I haven't seen yet. Tonight's micro-theme is "It's a Bad Sign". We're doing The Omen triology straight to Sam Neill.

Up first, the OG (or OGP, for Original Gregory Peck):

The Omen (1976)

Onward and upward.

...Downward?

Either way, it's:

Damien: Omen II (1978)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

It is time. Time for my romp with Sam Neill in whatever the the heck they managed to do with:

Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Today's main entry for Burd's #31NightsOfHorror is actually a matinee. Seeing a screening of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) with a live score provided by The Invisible Czars at The Music Box Theatre.

Live contemporary scoring is the secret to making "boring" old silent films instantly more accessible. I try to offer it as a recommendation when I talk to folks who say they can't get into silent films.

Before our main event, I must do a yearly tradition as a BOO-nus 👻 Watch.

Now rewatching the single most important influence that inevitably set me on the path to Horror:

Mr. Boogedy (1986) and Bride of Boogedy (1987).

These are unimpeachable icons of horror and I will not suffer detractors.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

The fact that Mimi Kennedy's character doesn't murder Richard Masur as the dad in this first one BAFFLES me.

Patience of a saint to live with that man.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

I still want someone to sell a recreation of the Mr. Boogedy Pop-up Book.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Finally making my way home after visiting with friends who saw the Dr. Caligari screening with me at the Music Box.

Very fun live score, though they tried to do an audience participation bit that didn't quite carry.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

In low power mode, at the moment, but still gotta get in tonight's movie for Burd's #31NightsOfHorror.

Rewatching Piranha (1978) in anticipation of seeing a 35mm print of the sequel later this month.

Tonite's logline:
Def-Con 4 (1985)
THE LAST DEFENSE. THE LAST HOPE. THE BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD HAS BEGUN.
Two men and a woman circle the globe in a satellite armed with a nuclear device. The third world war breaks out, and a few months later the satellite crashes. They survive the crash but one man gets killed by survivors and the other man gets caught. The woman stays by the remains of the the satellite but is soon caught by evil punks who have taken power.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

I'm pretty stoked for when I get home from work.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

"Global conflict is now unthinkable"

Woof...

It's time for Def-Con 4 (1985).

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

*psst*

Hey y'all? This movie kind of fucking rules.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

So I don't make a habit of posting my Letterboxd reviews because I tend to be of the opinion that if you'd want to read them, you'd go follow me there.

But this ding dang movie, y'all.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

A review of Def-Con 4 (1985)

Love | Like | Indifferent | Dislike Canadian Scifi Horror Go! What an opening mind fuck. Not scary, just mentally and emotionally devastating. Cold War dry, dark humor. A clever attempt to show a world ending nuclear war on a budget. The, "its all happening down there and we're stuck up here." A little harrowing almost, if you look past some of the acting. I was interested & even a little excited excited by the time re-entry occurs. Things really went downhill fast on Earth, huh? This only really is funny when you see it. But I litterally paused the movie

I was gonna roll the dice on picking another Scifi Horror as a BOO-nus 👻 Watch tonight but after riding so high with Def-Con 4, I really don't want to risk a dud.

So I'm hedging with a sure fire hit.

It's Event Horizon, baby!

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Tonight's film has been one I've regularly put off because I never quite felt in the right mood for the premise. I decided to force my hand and scheduled it for Burd's #31NightsOfHorror this year because I know it is gonna be worth it.

Now watching:

Green Room (2015)

Welp.

That fucked me right up.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Tonight is the second week of Fright in the Brites 🍺, where I set up a projector in the brewery for a horror movie.

Doing a classic 80s slasher that people will hopefully find...drilling.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Getting set up for Fright in the Brites!
🍺🔪🍺🔪🍺

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Time for Fright in the Brites!

It's The Slumber Party Massacre (1982).

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

An October Friday the 13th is a High Holiday. A Feast Day, if you will.

The Feast of St. Jason Of Voorhees

Services begining at 8am central:

Part 2
Part 3
Final Chapter
Jason Lives
The New Blood
Jason Takes Manhattan
Jason X
Srigala aka Indonesian F13th (International Observance)
Freddy vs Jason

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

May the Feast of St. Jason Of Voorhees begin!

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

*Throws toot directly at your screen*

"This ought to be quirky and fun but it's only in 2D, oooOOOooo!"

Time for Friday The 13th Part III (1982)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Yes, I did take off work today (citing a religious holiday) to just lay around watching Jason flicks.

LET ME HAVE THIS!

Anyway:

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

OR

The one where I shudder everytime someone utters the phrase "dead fuck".

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Jason Lives Or The One Where Jason Gets a James Bond opening.

Friday the 13th: Jason Lives (1986)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

A little bit of a brief break plus I also have to start considering weather conditions to try and make the showing of Srigala tonight. Seems there will be quite a bit of rain. My main means of conveyance atm is a pair of Vans with epoxy over the sections of rubber sole that were wearing thin. Not exactly all weather tires.

May have to punt on that viewing.

In the meantime The Feast of St. Jason Of Voorhees will resume shortly.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

And we're back with our next entry, Jason vs *cough* Carrie.

I mean Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

The one that no one really loves but really the one that everyone ought to love, even if just a little.

Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

I said this was a High Holiday but it's also a "High" holiday.

I'm floating like this accursed graduation boat.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

I am slightly suspect of folks who don't like this one.

It's Jason X, baby!

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

I do think I'm gonna bow out of going to see Srigala. I hate to be passing on it but I am simply not up for an outing atm.

Going to take a break and kinda see what I want to do for the rest of the night.

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Might be calling some auidble's on today's selection for Burd's #31NightsOfHorror.

I had the first four NoES films scheduled but I need some kind of change of pace.

Updates when I actually figure out what that means.

There's usually at least on day of Burd's #31NightsOfHorror where I just wind up taking the mulligan. I think today is that day.

Funny thing that mental health.

Spend the whole got dang year psyching myself up for Burd's #31NightsOfHorror only to spend the weekend in a bit of a spiral and I'm just gonna call it a wash again today.

Retry tomorrow, I guess. 😮‍💨

Back in the saddle. Unplanned breaks are prone to happen. Especially when everything else seems extra particularly on fire.

Starting back up with a first time watch that has me a little embarrassed. I've never seen the original or the remake before so I'm rectifying that partially tonight.

Now watching:
Ju-on: The Grudge (2002)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

Hey. How about a BOO-nus 👻 Watch?

No?

TOO SLOW!

It's time for:

Slotherhouse (2023)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

I'm making up some lost yardage here tonight.

Let's throw on another BOO-nus 👻 Watch.

A movie that completely bounced off me on first watch but that I start to fall deeper and deeper in love with on each return.

Hell House LLC (2015)

Burd's #31NightsOfHorror

The mini-theme for tonight's Burd's #31NightsOfHorror double feature is 'Cronenberg The Younger'.

Because the weird flesh apple doesn't fall far from the knotted gnarly body horror tree.

@chicagoburdman Controversial opinion, I think the American version is better. Maybe not that controversial since the director got a do over on his own film.
@chicagoburdman Weirds me out the amount of people who don't think this is good.
@chicagoburdman hashtag goals, this looks so fun 🥰

@nicegnome 💜

(my secret dream is to become a mobile pirate cinema)

@chicagoburdman I do not know what that is but all of those words sound amazing 🏴‍☠️💖
@chicagoburdman Looks great. Horror films and beer, what else do you need?
@chicagoburdman The Slumber Party Massacre, perchance?
