Every time the Israeli-Palestinian conflict flares up, we are asked to pretend that this is new, this is unprecedented, the government of Israel has done everything it can, that Israel suffers the worst, and the burden of peace falls on the hopeless, destitute, and severely oppressed Palestinian people.

The government of Israel can stop this bloodshed anytime it wants. It doesn't want to. It wants to squeeze the Palestinians out of existence and it expects them to simply roll over and die.

The state of Israel has a powerful and extremely well-funded war machine, it routinely uses civilian settler militias as terror squads to uproot and destroy Palestinians' lives, and it enjoys carte blanche from the US and international community.

The situation looks hopeless for Palestinians. The deck is stacked heavily against them and no help is forthcoming. Hamas are bastards. But the Israeli government has no right to expect peaceful compliance to its genocidal agenda.

I am not defending Hamas but I would point out there are no shortage of stories of rape and violence being committed by IDF soldiers and their militias.

These stories just don't receive attention and condemnation from the rest of the world.

One side of this conflict has vastly more power than the other.

Hamas deserves condemnation.

But as long as the international community gives the Israeli government permission to wage war indiscriminately on the Palestinian people on the pretext of "fighting terrorism" while turning a blind eye to how it uses that rationale to perpetuate the conflict, nothing will change.

Selective outrage doesn't help anyone in this situation.

@gwynnion My heart always aches knowing the suffering of the regular Israelis and Palestinians, who have nothing to do with Hamas or the government, always get caught in the crossfire. The Israeli government is not blameless, just like Hamas isn't blameless. It all makes me sick, too much carnage.
@gwynnion Israel is a made up country. One day, it didn’t exist. The next day, it did. Comment added for context.

@gwynnion

One side is a terrorist organisation. The other is a terrorist govt supported by the international community.

@gwynnion

And there is one side of this conflict that has considerably more freedom to act to resolve the situation, but consistently chooses ‘security’ and military ‘solutions’, which predictably result in death.

@DavidM_yeg Israel on genocide:

Never Again *
(* to us; we can do it though)

@gwynnion

@gwynnion right from inception in 1948. And before too when things like the Irgun and Stern Gang and other militias and paramilitaries were on a rampage (some openly Fascist too). The Hanagh later became the building blocks for the IDF. One can condemn the theocratic bastards of Hamas (itself an oppressor of Palestinians) while recognizing that this is almost 80 years of a genocidal state (and longer acts of genocide). There’s no equivalence.
@gwynnion I’m hoping things have been less Hell here, because Twitter is beyond fucked on this (like more than it is as a whole). Muskrat succeeded 🙃

@gwynnion Don't think your rhetoric of "I am not defending..." gives you carte blanche to go on and do what you actually do, which of course is defending and excusing murderers, rapists, terrorists whose only goal is the obliteration of #Israel and the slaughtering of all jews.

Contrary to Hamas, who use their own babies as human shields, the #IDF actually values and saves arab lives. You spreading misinformation and lies will not chance this.

Apologists like you enable the terror of Hamas.

@jack @gwynnion She’s completely defending them. Sickening.
@gwynnion The actions of Hamas are simply those of a people who have been given no other option.
@pileofgarbage @gwynnion Palestine today reminds me of Finland in WW2, they had no other option than to side with the bad guys
@gavinisdie @gwynnion Well it shouldn't because that's insane. Maybe do some more reading about the actual conflict we're talking about. Unless you're here to just try and do a Nazi thing then fuck off.
@pileofgarbage @gwynnion I wasn't trying to support Nazis, I was just trying to compare a modern situation to one from history, I'm sorry if I offended you (Not sarcastic because I know actual nazis say sorry sarcastically)
@gavinisdie @gwynnion The Palestinians, be they Hamas or independent, never sided with the bad guys. They chose life over oppression, subjugation, displacement and death. This isn't the first time they've made that choice and it wont be the last. The only "bad guy" in this situation is the state of Israel, and there is not a single Palestinian who is siding with them.
@gwynnion You should block that Otto Toot guy in your mentions (I already have) he is a first-class creep. I won’t go into details.
@gwynnion honestly this is a situation where no matter what side you choose you are an asshole
@gavinisdie @gwynnion you're not an asshole if you side with Palestine
@gwynnion I think since the people of Palestine do not have a strong united expat group wielding power anywhere, we only receive one side's story. Not the whole story. The Gaza is essentially an open air prison, and has been for years.
But that does not excuse terrorism.
@gwynnion
You have it a little backwards. The Palestinians could have accepted the peace plan at Camp David in 2000 from Barak or a few weeks ago later from Clinton. They could have accepted Olmert’s plan but they did not. They could have turned Gaza into Singapore instead they built rockets. They are the ones who could have brought peace but have repeatedly chosen war.
