a New York Times writer is mad that you won't pay for his newspaper's transphobia and constant push to send your kids to war
@drewtoothpaste even if you do agree to pay them, if you change your mind you can't cancel online, you need to talk to a retention specialist who will try to talk you out of it. Very scummy.

@drewtoothpaste I doubt even they're mad. It's not like they get a cut of the profits apart from the pittance they pay their workers.

Also, this definitely happens on Reddit for sure.

@finley @drewtoothpaste It's a bit harder to notice on Reddit, because it may be weeks before anyone in the discussion tries to read the article and learn it's paywalled.

@drewtoothpaste Patrick my brother in Christ I stand with all workers but it is not our job to defend you from your ghoul of an employer

Thanks for posting this, I screamed so hard inside when I read it the neighbors’ dogs started barking #truefact

@drewtoothpaste Even the email he's asking for is too much to pay - they're going to sell the address and then the inbox will be flooded with spam and scams. No fucking thanks.
@mjc0961 @drewtoothpaste ^^^this

if i could just put cash into a slot in my (or, better yet, someone else's) computer or something with no commitment, no tracking, no followup, i'd probably spend a lot more money on online stuff than i do now

heck, i'm way more likely to respond to someone's begpost on here than give anything to a registered nonprofit just because folks here aren't going to fill my physical mailbox with promo stuff for the rest of my life

@apophis Ugh, the physical stuff in my mailbox pisses me off so much.

"You donated once, we spent money making tote bags and mailing labels for you, please send us more money"

How about instead of making and shipping junk I didn't ask for, you spend the money helping whoever your charity is meant to help? I have never donated more after receiving physical junk.

@mjc0961 oh it’s even worse if you donate any kind of animal rights group. They mail stuff with photos or descriptions of graphic violence to try to get more $ and it’s traumatizing. I don’t want to see that every time I go to my mailbox. And you’re right, they must spend more than the money I donate to them to send me solicitations for more money. Can they just not? I had to stop doing it because the depictions of violence in my mailbox was upsetting.

Sorta like this --
(not much has changed in 30 years)

@breadandcircuses @maggiemaybe @mjc0961

I never knew I was a terrorist! I always toss it as soon as I get that junk! And don't subscribe to any magazines!

@mjc0961 @apophis
I bought a $60 PBS passport so we could stream Mystery! shows, and I just can't wait for the new onslaught of appeals.

"Mastodon is the only site where a user is guaranteed to gripe about a paywalled article every time. Folks, ads are dead. Subscriptions pay for the journalism and feed our families. A trial sub is cheap. | give away a lot of free links. You can read many with an email (regi-wall is not a paywall). It is easy to get around with research. You do you. Just don't reply with a complaint or a paywall evasion. It's kind of rude. I may block you. Move on. Read something else. It's a big old internet."
@drewtoothpaste "it's easy to get around it but don't evade the paywall". what! make up your mind!
@drewtoothpaste I'm sorry but the NYT is owned by millionaires and the WaPo is owned by a billionaire. Let them pay their employees properly. News should be free. if they want to charge people for the games and whatnot fine, but news should ALWAYS be free. It is the biggest mistake news orgs everywhere have made. They should have always added extra value worth being charged for or provided enough LOCAL news to be worth a subscription.

BUT WHY DON'T PEOPLE WANT TO PAY FOR THE NYT???

idk, maybe because even great news on the economy gets reported like this? Sigh.

@drewtoothpaste also everyone everywhere gripes about paywalls. It's not just here.
@drewtoothpaste
Ah, the old 'register your email for free' so the data scraping can begin. Zero interest in feeding his family.
@drewtoothpaste I used to subscribe but the editorial bent pushed me away. So long and thanks for all the fish!
@drewtoothpaste this is the same guy who I stopped following when he tweeted he was ordering Thai food delivery in the midst of a hurricane so....
@drewtoothpaste is Regi-wall one of the legendary giant Pokemon?
@drewtoothpaste even worse, he thinks Mastodon is a 'site' and clearly has no concept of what the fediverse is.

@drewtoothpaste Paywall evasions are a moral duty, not rude.

Information must be shared.

@lispi314 @drewtoothpaste as for how journalists are supposed to get paid
> points at independent news organizations like recorder.ro that are ran on donations and do better investigative journalism than most paywalled news sites
