Hitler attempted a failed coup
Hitler then had a trial
Hitler then went to jail
Hitler then got out and became Chancellor

History repeats itself.

We laugh and clown on Trump but he is dangerous as fuck. He has zero empathy, a need for power and an extremely loyal and angry base.

@Miriamm thank goodness he’s old
@MarleenChocoladeteen @Miriamm Hitler needed 10 years after the beer hall putsch to become chancellor. There is hope Trump doesn't have that many more years in him. On the other hand, Trump has much more media channels to his disposal for propaganda than Hitler had, so he probably doesn't need 10 years
@Miriamm true. The only hope I have is that age will catch with him before he makes it further.
@Miriamm
Hitler wasn't 80 when he was in jail.
@GatekeepKen @Miriamm There are others who can pick up where Trump left off. There are always a bunch of would-be dictators.

@Miriamm

Like Hitler he has no special skills except the ability to create chaos and take advantage of any opportunities that arise from it. Well, that and the complete lack of conscience that allows him to promise his base that they can be as selfish and yet unaccountable as he is.

@Miriamm I also recall that Hitler received substantial financial support from global industrialists who admired his anti-communist, anti-labor union, and other regressive policies.

@Miriamm I've found myself relying on the idea that Trump's much older than Hitler and any mandatory minimums are likely to be a life sentence.

Which then just punts to the hope no one can exploit his cult of personality after he passes...

@Miriamm the fictional(?) novel "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis is almost 100 years old - can you believe we're still dealing with this shit??
@Miriamm @lisamelton I really hate being an alarmist, but that’s 100% true.

@Miriamm

Yes I agree. However Trump is the figure head. Remember over 70 million people voted for him. It rots from the bottom. Trump is the distraction

@Miriamm It’s easy to focus on the relatively minor differences while missing the bigger pattern. Trump is crafty - when he does things that seem dumb, it’s worth making sure he isn’t playing a different game.

Trump knows how Hitler came to power. And Putin, and Duterte. With Bannon’s help, he might try to manufacture a version of the Reichstag fire, or the apartment building explosions in Russia in 1999.

@Miriamm It’s not the #trump that’s most dangerous. He’s a demented clown and a fool. It’s his supporters that will rally around anyone who blows the fascists dog whistles we need to worry about.

@Miriamm

And he is now trying to become Speaker, just two accidents away from being President.

And he does not want to go to jail.

@Miriamm I haven’t laughed at the prick for a long time.
Under estimating the enemy often ends very badly

@Miriamm

Don't forget the courts. The courts in Weimar Germany were filled with right wing judges who were left over from the monarchy and were almost as partisan as Clarence Thomas. Any socialist or anarchist who tried the beer hall coup would have been sentenced to death IF they got a trial. The judge at Hitler's trial praised him for acting out of patriotism, and political murders by the right were nearly always let off.

@Miriamm Trump is no laughing matter at all, and history has not taught us nearly enough.
@Miriamm Hitler was in his mid 30s when he got out of prison. Trump will be over 80. He's running out of time.
@Miriamm As late as 1938 the French press was calling Hitler a clown and a buffoon and felt Germans would come to their senses. Clownish but very dangerous and violent. History has lessons for us.
@Miriamm Trump is too old and unfit to follow the same path, he is just as dangerous though.
@Miriamm I've been thinking, what would it look like if he were speaker of the house, and what effect would it both have on the house and the election campaign... Not that I'm expecting anything will stop him short of a coronary, but publicity without his fawning fans... and on camera without editing for maximum effect... might damage his reputation...

@Miriamm Okay scratch that...

Putting him up against the editor (without the dalek paymasters) with instant recall of everything he's ever said, would cut him down to size...

@Miriamm Maybe he'll "Eipstein" his way out and the problem will be solved.
