@breiter

Because that makes racists feel better? If Newsom looked at his list of qualified candidates and saw that his top 3 candidate finalists were all Black women, he can pre-announce that the finalist will be a Black woman.

Similarly, the US is very comfortable with less than 1% of all VC funding going to Black women. We all just pretend that racist exclusion isn't happening. But the minute 1 tiny fund says that it's going to give < .01% to Black women? Lawsuits! Claims of unfairness!🤡

@breiter

And I haven't read Newsom say anywhere that only Black women were eligible. I've read him say that the appointee will be a Black woman.

There's a significant difference between those two statements.

@mekkaokereke
There is a difference, yes, but Newsom is gonna know that the vast, vast majority of people will not PARSE the difference. If we're gonna assume there's a pre-announcement there are phrasings that will address that without tripping the 'make racists feel better' switch, & ones that a clever operator like him should've thought of. E.g. 'I have a list of top candidates for any appointment, and they are all black women.'
He set her up for a rough go & could've done better.
@breiter

@FeralRobots @breiter

There is no phrasing that will make racists happy. It's a fool's errand to try.

Martin Luther King couldn't find it. "Nonviolent protest" and "civil disobedience" were hated terms in their time.

"Black Lives Matter" is apparently a bad term. "Hands up, don't shoot" is also bad. "Defund the police" is terrible.

When you find a framing that works for racists, let me know. Might win you a Nobel peace prize! Because even the peace prize winners couldn't figure it out.🤷🏿‍♂️

@FeralRobots @breiter

Newsom never committed to appointing a Black woman *before he had the final list of candidates*.

Joy Reid asked him if he would commit to appointing a Black woman if Feinstein steps down and he said, verbatim:

“I have multiple names in mind. We have multiple names in mind — and the answer is yes.”

So this is:
My top candidates are all Black women.👍🏿

Not:
I am setting being a Black woman as my primary eligibility criteria. I am don't have any candidates in mind yet. 👎🏿

@FeralRobots @breiter @mekkaokereke Suppose Newsom had released a shortlist of his final candidates; and they all just happened, merely by coincidence, to be white men. Would anyone, outside of a few customarily/ignored advocates for diversity, have batted an eye?
@mekkaokereke @breiter
I don't care about making racists happy, I care about making it harder for appointees.

@FeralRobots @breiter

But it didn't make it harder? It's already hard for the appointee. Because racism.

Look at the difference in experience and capabilities between Laphonza Butler and JD Vance. The fact that we're even having this conversation has nothing to do with Newsom announcing that his short list had Black women near the top, and everything to do with racism.

There is no phrasing that makes the racism go away, but it is exhausting for Black folk to have to parse their words trying.

@mekkaokereke @breiter
I'm only asking Gavin Newsom to watch his parsing.

@mekkaokereke @FeralRobots @breiter The only thing that will make racists happy is nominating a white person.

Why is it that whenever a white guy gets the job, nobody says "Oh, he's clearly just getting that job because of his race and gender"?

@breiter @FeralRobots @finley @mekkaokereke Oh, come on now. If we’re going to go down this road, let’s be honest. There are other factors to consider like being a member of the good ol’ boy club, legacy, ability to fit into the “culture” (whiteness), and likability (as in not being not gay, not being a Person of Color, and not being a woman or trans).
😏
@finley @mekkaokereke @FeralRobots @breiter I’m going to 💯 start saying this from now on!
@finley @mekkaokereke @FeralRobots @breiter There are a *lot* of people thinking it though.

@mekkaokereke @FeralRobots @breiter

I belive the framing they are looking for is "Everything is fine as it is and nothing needs to change."

Anything short of that is going to be unacceptable.

@mekkaokereke @FeralRobots @breiter

Most of the right is operating in bad faith 99% of the time. You're correct that they will never be satisfied. This Sartre exerpt about anti-semitism also applies to racism it seems.

@unikitty @mekkaokereke @FeralRobots @breiter Oh, it *absolutely* applies to anti-Black racism, to anti-LGBTQ2S+, to anti-whomever...
@unikitty @mekkaokereke @FeralRobots @breiter Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous..

@unikitty @mekkaokereke @FeralRobots @breiter 2/2 ..reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

I do put "Yes to ACAB and BLM" in my dating profile, if it makes people run away, so much the better. I don't want to date them anyway.

@yourautisticlife @mekkaokereke @breiter
I keep reading ACAB as Assigned Cop At Birth & I'm not sure I can shake that.
