When we moved to this valley 25 years ago, we always celebrated if we could make it to Sept 18 -20th without a killing frost. Today we will have tomatoes and basil with our lunch. All week we will have highs in the above 80°F and lows in the 50's.

One brain center purrs in delight.
Another tightens up in fear.

Nicelarming.

@bethsawin The number of times I shudder at someone saying "Sure is a nice day!" 😬

@bethsawin

as when one brain enjoys sitting outside in the evening without being chewed mercilessly by bugs; as the other brain worries about what happens if the bugs are truly gone.

@bethsawin Same here in Denmark, where we just enjoyed the warmest September on record.
@bethsawin Strange weather, here comparison with historic normal values, from DMI, the Danish weather and climate agency:

@bethsawin In SoCal we have a new kind of mosquito. They say it’s been here a few years, but this is the first year it’s affecting my ability to hang in my yard.

“Since Aedes mosquitoes bite more aggressively it may appear there are more numbers of mosquitoes. Aedes bite very aggressively compared to our native Culex mosquitoes and can make even short periods of time outdoors difficult.”

@bethsawin …….. our “cottage season” in a building with only a fireplace for heat, has been extended at least a month over the past 40 years ……… #nicealarming
@bethsawin
30 or 40 years ago, the high temp for the year around here was 86. It used to go a few times each winter to 25 or 30 below 0F and we'd go 2 weeks without it going above zero.
The scary side of this coin is that the Great Lakes are *hot*. I suspect that the Mohawk Valley is going to see a 5-6' lake effect snowfall this winter, which will be too much snow even for around here, where 2' is common and 3' isn't all that big problem. Things could get tough in a few months.
@bethsawin Southeast Michigan here, currently 80F. 😐
@bethsawin I didn't create this but it sums up the feeling nicely. "Enjoy the weather, worry about the climate".

@bethsawin exactly so…

I have lived in this region almost all of my 63 years. I remember the changes, and it’s terrifying.

But also, it was glorious to bask outdoors with a friend in October sunlight this weekend, especially in light of the likely Covid surge that will keep me isolated soon.
