As we enter the trial, and you see the endless reporting referring to the "boy genius" "crypto whiz kid", remember: Sam Bankman-Fried is not a child.

Sam Bankman-Fried is not a child

But the media is treating him like one.

his mom needs to brush his hair, though.

His mom was too busy profiting from the "ethics" she taught her son

How Involved Were SBF's Parents?

@molly0xfff I'm tempted to create new accounts just to boost and favorite this more.
@molly0xfff Nor is he a boy genius or a whiz kid. At a minimum, he's a massive fraud and very likely he is a criminal behind a dumb Ponzi scheme (yet to be proven, but seems hard to deny).
@molly0xfff not sure I would say genius either.
@molly0xfff Only rich white men get to be boys
@molly0xfff
Funny how the media try to treat wealthy white men as children when they're accused of wrongdoing... even when those men are in their 30s and 40s...
@molly0xfff “he's not the messiah he's a very naughty boy” (Life of Brian quote)
@molly0xfff and certainly not a genius.
@molly0xfff “mediocre abuser” with a financially stable background seems more fitting.
@molly0xfff
not a child, but deeply neuro-atypical.

@rexi

What did you see that leads to that conclusion?

@unchartedworlds
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/michael-lewis-sam-bankman-fried-ftx-book-60-minutes/

this most recent interview material confirmed that view.

though I'm no clinician, I think most would agree his behavior falls outside of norm.

Sam Bankman-Fried "thinks he's innocent," author Michael Lewis says ahead of book about FTX founder

Author Michael Lewis spent countless hours with FTX founder and alleged fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried. He details the cryptocurrency wunderkind's rise and fall in his new book, "Going Infinite."

CBS News

@rexi

Not getting the neurodivergence vibes off that myself. I'd agree clearly a _belief_ system out of the norm, but I feel that could be due to too much insulation from the consequences of his actions up till now.

Not saying you're definitively wrong though!

@molly0xfff

> offering refreshments to a reporter “as if we were there for a playdate”.

Unless the refreshments were ants on a log, fruit roll-ups, and pizza rolls isn't it pretty normal to offer refreshments to guests?

@molly0xfff

"Oh, the poor autistic boy..."

yeah, if he wasn't from a rich family and/or male this would be playing out very differently

@ScootrGrrl @molly0xfff similar to that guy that got 11000 years in prison, eh?
@rsilvie @molly0xfff I’m more pointing out he would have not gotten this far and been so enabled by so many people

@molly0xfff

You just have to know how to speak the language of reporters covering Silicon Valley.

"Boy genius" => "Arrogant man-child"

"Tech mogul" => "Arrogant venture capitalist you don't care about"

"Mercurial leader" => "Arrogant and abusive boss"

"Tech wizard" => "Arrogant, mediocre, but well-connected white man"

"Technology reporter" => "Person who brown-noses arrogant tech oligarchs for access"

No, it is absolutely not a coincidence that all of these contain the word arrogant.

@molly0xfff
“He’s not a child! He’s thirty-four!”

@molly0xfff @hacks4pancakes Have we ever determined the cutover for a guy when he shifts from “a young man of only 20/35/52(etc) and didn’t understand that this was wrong but has learned from his mistakes” over to “well, he’s a product of his time and can’t be judged by standards of today”?
@rmd1023 @molly0xfff @hacks4pancakes
Oh, he's a product of his time alright. And the time in question is now.
@rmd1023 @molly0xfff @hacks4pancakes Somewhere around the time when they start to arrive into court in a wheelchair?
@rmd1023
One's for the living, one's for the less respiratorily inclined.
@molly0xfff @hacks4pancakes
@rmd1023 @molly0xfff @hacks4pancakes I've been around the block a couple of dozen times now and I am firmly in the 'old enough to know better' camp. You should be judged on your ability to adapt. Ancient history and 'today's standards' are iffy, but today's actions should be judged by today's standards.
@rmd1023 @molly0xfff @hacks4pancakes It's complicated and is determined largely by skin color and wealth of parents.
@molly0xfff this was a great piece. Did the media give Elizabeth Holmes the same benefits? After many years of watching the media cover Theranos, I’m positive the coverage would be much more harsh if SBF were a women.
@molly0xfff the usual "the 25-year-old college student" vs "19-year-old man", depending on race/ethnicity/social class in news coverage.
@molly0xfff Calling him a child would be insulting children. The average 14yo has much higher standards of personal responsibility.

@molly0xfff , but he is white, with a baby face!

@molly0xfff rarely is someone who sounds so nervous, more entitled to speaking with utmost confidence.

You hit the nail right on the head.

I recall around the time this was published wondering if i was just too stupid to understand these technologies. It is very nice to have confirmed that i was probably too smart to be conned.

@molly0xfff Isn’t calling him SBF already an infantilisation?

@molly0xfff

Michael Lewis is a major offender here.

@eestileib amusingly when i went on his podcast in may, the very first thing i said to him was about this issue

@molly0xfff

I really enjoyed your appearance.

I listened to the whole series with interest, and a pit in my stomach.

His attitude towards white collar criminals from Madoff to SBF appears to be roughly "He was just having some fun playing a game and committed a foul, take your free throws and move on. Why are you guys being so MEAN to him?"

I'm wondering whether I'll be able to stomach his "Judging Sam" series starting up now...

Nor a whizz, nor evil, nor a genius. Just a greedy, stupid, entitled poor excuse for a human who should be punished to the maximum extent possible under the law, along with all others like him.
@molly0xfff Large adult son syndrome strikes again!
@molly0xfff And if he's a genius, he clearly is of the evil genius variety.
@brouhaha @molly0xfff If by evil genius you mean the Austin Powers sort of evil genius.
@scanner @molly0xfff I was thinking more of Dr. Evil from that series.
