To speakers of underrepresented languages: If your language isn't available in Mastodon's posting window and you'd like me to add it, please let me know.

I will need:

1. Locale code https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes 2-letter ISO 639-1 codes are preferred, and if not available, we can use a 639-3 code instead
2. English name
3. Native name

If your language is small, try not to be too granular re. dialect so that you will get more posts when filtering.

Boosts welcome.

List of ISO 639-1 codes - Wikipedia

Is anybody from #TootSea still missing their language in the Mastodon posting window? See post above on how to request it.

@gunchleoc Great!
Unfortunately, there's no 2-letter code available, and I think we're maybe just a handful learners/speakers on Mastodon, but I'd be elated if it could be added:
1. 639-3 code: vai
2. Vai
3. ꕙꔤ [vai]

ꕒꔤꕪ [ɓáíka] / Thanks!

Vai language - Wikipedia

@Mabande Is the Latin letter representation added to 3 on purpose, or will all speakers be able to recognize the language in the filter selection (https://mastodon.social/settings/preferences/other) if it's listed just in the native script as ꕙꔤ?

I have made screenshots for both variants to help you decide

@gunchleoc It's perfect with just the native script, anyone who speaks it will at least recognize the script if they can't write it :)
(I got a bit too excited and added the pronunciation)

@gunchleoc OMG! Thank you so much!
@Mabande You're welcome / 'S e do bheatha!
@gunchleoc I just noticed it's live!
ꕒꔤꕪ ꕢ꘎꘎ / Thank you so much!

@Mabande Excellent news, thanks for letting me know! 💃

I was busy, so I haven't checked GitHub in a few days.

@gunchleoc Might be I jumped the gun a bit, cause it seems only be live in the Tusky app I'm using, but not on .social, but still!
Happy as heck :)
@gunchleoc is the language filtering still only for the federated feed? Can you language filter your main or local instance feed?

@jerome The description just says "public feed", so I guess it's the federated and local, but not the home feed. You can individually filter the profiles that you follow though to remove some languages from your home timeline.

I have only looked at a very small section of the code so far, so I don't know how filtering works in detail.

@gunchleoc Can't check if supported because I currently do not have a working computer and am running an old version of Tusky on my phone for technical reasons but:
1. nds
2. Low German
3. Plattdüütsch

@anarchiv PR is up: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/27434

It will probably take a while until this becomes live - I already have a backlog of PRs sitting there. I expect that the code review team is short-handed.

@gunchleoc Sweet, thank you! Not much I can do to save one of my two mother tongues from dying out, especially since I hardly speak it myself anymore, but sometimes it's the small things :)

@anarchiv Plattdüütsch wurde jetzt gemergt und wird in Mastodon 4.3.0 als Postsprache verfügbar sein 🙂

@gunchleoc Scots ta. SCO . Ken't as juist Scots in Ingles an Scots

@olap Scots is already available.

If you want the user interface too, you can contribute to the translation on Crowdin https://crowdin.com/project/mastodon/sco

Make sure to align with the other translators on terminology though, especially for important keywords like "boost", "federated", "post" etc.

@gunchleoc braw. Must be missin summin though, still cannae tag thus oan the default app as Scots

@gunchleoc I came across this while looking for details after the new UI with language selection got rolled out and one of our language script variant is not listed (unlike say Chinese which had variants listed just fine in the selection)

requesting addition of Jawi Malay
locale code: ms_Arab
native name: بهاس ملايو

we usually call it "Jawi Malay" but if you want the English name be consistent with how existing variants are shown then "Malay (Arabic)" works as well

ref https://www.unicode.org/cldr/charts/43/summary/ms_Arab.html

@gunchleoc note that while CLDR listed the locale code as ms_Arab (with underscore), HTML usually use ms-Arab (with hyphen)

for example, go to the wikipedia article for Kuala Lumpur
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuala_Lumpur
look at the infobox on the right > Other transcription(s) > Jawi

right-click on the Jawi text and inspect-element it, you will see it is marked as ms-Arab instead of ms_Arab

Requested via Mastodon: https://mastodon.social/@msiapublictransport/111818657390526946 I have chosen "Jawi Malay" as the English name, because I expect that this will be a more likely search term ...

@msiapublictransport The Pull Request has been merged and Jawi Malay will be available as a posting language in Mastodon 4.3.0 🙂

@gunchleoc

Russian and ukrainian would be needed by some.

@Elischeva91 Already there, they are even available as UI languages.

I only work on the web interface. Depending on which app you use, it might be different there.
